Those that used Plasti-dip, how's it holding up?

About to spray my fog surrounds and the inside of my new INGS grill when it arrives. So just wondering how durable this stuff is. Do you recommend scuffing/sanding before spraying? If so, what grit? Thanks folks.

I did used the plasti-dip on my fogs, Grille trim and the grilles themselves. And the only thing I notice about them that kinda bothers me is that when towel drying them, the little lint (fuzzies) sticks to it. Nothing crazy, but I kind of have OCD so... Other than that it's very durable and haven't had any issues even in the really hot days. Also I didn't sand them and they turned out really good still.

used a few layers of plasti dip on my front lip.
it seems holds up pretty good.

i did scuff the lip before spraying with a pretty fine grit (the only one that i had)

i'm not going to mention the bottom of the lip, as i scrape that one on a daily basis ;)

i used plasti dip on my center console and it collected dust and fiber particles like crazy...so i just spray painted it...however a few buddies have gtis and they are plasti dip whores...lips grills mirrors badges they do it all and it appears to hold up very well

I don't know if guys that sanded theirs have the same problem as me with the lint. But I just think that if you use the aerosol type it makes a very fine bumpy type finish when it dries. Either way it looks good though!

I plastidip'ed the silver mustache as well as my front lip. 5 months later it looks as good as the day I applied it! I love how rocks just bounce off of the rubberized surface because my front lip hasn't had a chip yet! :D

So, I failed miserably. Good news, Home Depot had plastidip for $5.98. And I was able to paint my silver mustache black with no problems. Getting the front grill without taking the bumper off was no problem at all. I did my research in advance on where the 4 screws are.

The problem ironically was with the fog surrounds. I decided that I simply wanted to plastidip the entire housing. I used 350 grit sanding sponge to scuff the entire housing (both the silver part and the plastic part). I sprayed both housings generously, must have done about 5 coats. They looked great. Put them back on a little before they were completely dry and admired my work. Today (1 day later), I noticed that some of the plastidip came out a little blotchy. Instead of doing the entire thing over or taking them off and putting on an even coat, I took the lazy route, and decided to spray tire-wet on them and used a microfiber towel to wipe it around a bit (didn't want them too wet looking). but I must have rubbed too hard and the many layers I put on must have not had enough time to dry.

Yep, crap came off. So I decided to take the housings off, and used a brillo pad and some elbow grease to take all of it off. My fingers have no more finger prints on them. And my arms hurt. My wife laughed at me. Priceless . Now it's raining outside, so I'll have to wait for another day to get it right. Word of advice. LET IT DRY THOROUGHLY!!! 1 DAY ISN'T ENOUGH IF YOU DO TOO MANY COATS! ;)

So finally got down to redoing my fog surrounds. Installed some $7 overlays while I had the surrounds off. Sorry for the crap cellphone pics, but wife's away and took the camera with her. Came out very even this time. I didn't tape off the fog surrounds. Painted the entire thing. I'm very happy with the results. I hope they don't peel. Painted mustache looks perfect, but I'm replacing grill with INGS next week anyway.

08 sti here did foglight surrounds and grill holds up great no issue what so ever going on 7 months same with stock bbs wheels I just use degreaser to clean the wheels. Great thing about plasti dip is it covers up chipped paint and light curb-rash on wheels.

Omg you guys are such plastidip noobs haha.

No need to "scuff the paint" haha. It sticks to clear coat or pretty much anything.

Microfiber will destroy plastidip.

Also, no need to dry it with a towel, just let it air dry.

Go to dipyourcar.com if you need more tips.

in my experience wax will destroy your dip no matter the number of coats or dry time. i use meguiers platinum carnuba wax and it made the plastidip soft and peeled off when i went to buff it says on both the can and on the wax not to use wax on dipped surfaces. if someone has a secret on how to successfully wax it i would love to hear it.

I'm not a huge fan of plasti dipping anything other than wheels or small parts but someone recommended clear plasti dip for the front bumper. It beats the price of a clear bra but will it maintain a somewhat oem gloss or will it have that same crappy texture?

No need to scuff, sand or any other crazy prep work other than make sure the area clean. I've done it on several of my cars. Here's 2 examples.

And this is what it looks like when it peels off. Like a sticker and paint is flawless

Holds up fine until you get new tires. Then the tire coming over the lip pulls some of the PD with it.

Also, If your wheels are not MINT and they have any imperfections, it is a PITA to get the PD off. It likes to stick in every little nook and cranny.

Otherwise its tough stuff
