Just happened to see this on Subaru JP website, it looks like everyone should throw 5w30 suggestion of the owner's manual into the garbage, and switching to Motul 5w40 is a right away for engine protection.

Subaru, or more specifically, Subaru Tecnica International (STI), has been recommending the use of Motul in SAE viscosity 5W-40 or Motul in SAE viscosity 10W-40 for well over a decade for "sports use".

It basically implies if you're a harsh/spirited driver, use of the regularly-recommended engine oil isn't sufficient for Subaru drivers who are not just casual grocery getters.

Good chance the STI ST98050ST110 engine oil is identical to Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 and/or 6100 SYNERGIE+ 5W-40.

Yep, the only reason Subaru recommends a low viscosity RC oil in USDM owner's manuals is due to the significant environmental credits they get from the government for doing so.

Just what we need, another oil topic thread.
Just keep it clean and don't redline the shit out of it. It's NOT a Honda. I bet 80% of us on here just drive "spirited" most of the time.
I've had my 05 STi for just less than a year now, I set my redline warning light to 5500 RPMs and never go past it. I also haven't had an oil change in 8,000 miles or so. It still purrs like a kitten with over 160,xxx original miles on the motor.
I'm adding oil all the damn time, so honestly I just change the filter.
If you blow your motor cause you don't have oil in it or beat the hell out of it, then you know it's your own fault for doing so.

Not trying to be rude, I just dont really think this a good practice. I mean would you have gotten that car if the previous owner followed the same practices that you do? Just because the engine burns oil doesn't mean you shouldn't actually be draining the oil and replacing it with new oil, thus performing an actual oil change. I can see how most people dont want to spend money on a car with 160K but an oil change is really the bare minimum. Its still an sti, and not some POS beater car. Yes you can argue that "its synthetic oil and is good for X amount" but i believe that a car with that kind of mileage should be having more frequent oil changes. Especially ones that burn and or leak oil. Thats a dangerous game your playing, im not sure what your trying to win or prove. Its an oil change, but to each their own.

Alot of us have been running Motul and Rotella 5w-40 for years. Its nice to actually see something like this on paper. There are so many people on here against 5w-40, its actually surprising. I agree with the logic behind using a thicker oil like 5w-40. The sti was never intended to be a grocery getter car, its an enthusiast car. The enthusiast crowd tend to have a much more aggressive driving profile than most.

I personally don't redline my car everyday, actually almost never. I even have the shift light set to 6200rpms to give some room when approaching actual redline. I usually dont even take the car up that high anyways. Taking the car up that high is not needed unless you really need to use the power. I will say that i get on the car every day and try and go through my gears when i can. I have used 5w-40 oil since my first oil change at 1000miles and have been fine since.
