Re: DEFI BF install -Step by step with pics

So i cracked open my 07 today, and my clock looks a little different. Do you know which ones to tap?

I assume the Bat, ground are the same. I think the p/on & p/off refer to the passenger airbag thing..., so which other 2 do you feel are the equivalent?

The labels are identical to the 04/05 - except for the airbag ones, which you correctly identified.

BATT is obviously 12V source
ILL is the headlight dimmer
GND is ground
ACC is the ignition

I believe there is a write up somewhere that bypasses the airbag warning light. I didn't have to deal with this as I have an 05, so I don't know how to tackle that.

Thanks man.

I plan on leaving the clock connected, and just stuffing it down into the dash... i think that bypasses, but hopefully somebody will chime in on that one.

There are two of them. The is one under the alternator, as I showed in the writeup, used by the oil pressure sensor. There is a second under the intercooler, but in stock form, its closed. You need to buy the piece from subaru, to make it an open plug to accept a sensor, such as oil temperature.
Whoops...guess I should read the forums more throughly. Disgard my PM to you...sorry about that

Does anyone know if the adapter piece from subaru has a 1/8" thread? The sensor that comes with my oil temp gauge (Prosport) is that size....or is that a standard size all around for sensors

Re: DEFI BF install -Step by step with pics

You can't just call it 1/8 thread and expect it to be the same. The 1/8 thread used on Subarus is 1/8-28 BSPT which is slightly different than the 1/8-27 NPT thread commonly used with USDM gauges. OP is calling the Defi sensor 1/8 PT which is slightly misleading, IIRC it is 1/8-28 BSPT so it matches up fine with the stock oil galley threaded plug. You can use a 1/8-27 NPT sender, just wrap it up a couple of turns with teflon tape and you should be fine, there are plenty of people that are running this way. Personally, I don't do things like that, but I have access to pretty much any machinery I need to change the threads or make my own plugs.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I apologize for my noobness. I am still a bit confused, you're saying that I can use the either sensor, to get oil temp but I might have to wrap with teflon tape to help it fit right?

Re: DEFI BF install -Step by step with pics

Teflon tape is good insurance with any of these tapered thread fittings. The only time I don't use Teflon tape is when I'm using Swagelok type fittings or fittings where the nuts have potential to split. I'm not specifically saying you can use either sensor, I'm saying you will have one sensor or the other supplied by the gauge manufacturer. While you can thread the NPT into the subaru part, BSPT and NPT are not the same threads. At some point you will be making your own threads in the plug, which isn't ideal in my opinion. I don't wish to add metal to my oil if I can help it. You can also buy BSPT to NPT conversions, there were several threads on nasioc about them a while back, I don't know if that info has migrated to this site.

Re: DEFI BF install -Step by step with pics

Just to aleviate confusion:

The Subaru plug is BSPT (otherwise known as PT)
The DEFI Oil Pressure sensor is BSPT (PT)
The METRIC (celcius) DEFI Oil Temperature sensor is BSPT (PT)
The IMPERIAL (farhenhiet) DEFI Oil Temperature sensor is NPT

The Oil pressure sensor comes with BSPT to NPT adaptor, so that you can install your pressure sensor into an NPT hole, commonly found on oil filter sandwich adapters.

DEFI recommends in the instructions that you use teflon tape, regardless of whether your inter-mixing PT and NPT threads.

This is where I'm having the issue...the oil filter adapters don't fit the 06 WRX...found that out the hard way :( . So I'm trying to find an alerternate way of installing the sensor which is 1/8 NPT to get a reading for oil temp. I've been searching around for an adapter that goes from the 1/8 NPT to BSPT but the problem there is the temp prob doesn't actually make it all the way down cause the adapter is in the way so I'm affraid I won't get a good reading...

Remember that the oil system is pressurized in those gallery areas. Your temperature sensor doesn't necessarily have to be protruting into any oil flow per se to get a reading (as you would with say, EGT). With pressures upwards of 100psi, the oil will push itself up into that adapter and the probe will take a reading with no ill effects.

Bump for the final stage

In the middle of my install now, finishing it up tomorrow (hopefully) Where can I get a NPT to BSPT adapter for the Imperial oil temp gauge, didnt know I would need one, but glad to find out ahead of time.
