13,000 miles... what to service?

I have 13,000 on my 04 now and I will be changing my oil again tomorrow. I was wondering...

I have been using Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic for a long while now, is it okay to switch to Royal Purple 5w30 synthetic?

Also, I want to have the fluids in the differentials changed. What weight do they both call for? What would be best to use if street driving, and occasionally tracking? Can I use RedLine 75w90? How many quarts will I need to do both the front and rear?

What else should I do at 13,000 to keep my car running peak?

Thanks,

C.R.

i would stay away from synthetic for subarus. the sti allready burns oil, and with the thin synthetic oil it might burn even quicker. just my 2cents
I switched to Mobil1 5/30 at 3k miles. At 21k miles my STi doesn't burn a drop. It did use about a 1/4 quart once on a road trip with a lot of 90mph driving through the Nevada desert in July. Nothing since.

ive been using syn mobil1 5w30 for about 6,000 miles now and it burns NOTHING. The key is not to romp on it when it's in its "crossover period". Because it is bound to mix with conventional oil. 500 miles later, oil change again. Then you're good to go.

Today I put in 5w30, synthetic mobil 1. I put royal purple 75w90 synthetic gl-5 rated oil in both the tranny and rear differential. I absolutely LOVE it. Shifts much cleaner, and it's gl-5 rated, so no grinding in any gear.

New falken azenis tires rt615's were put on today, and the ride is SO much nicer. they grip amazingly! still haven't fully scuffed them up, but I'm sure in a hundered miles or so I will be better fit to review them.

Whiteline steering bushings installed... amazing... power steering feels 100% better. And finally...

TXS catless racepipe installed in place of high flow cat... now I have a full un-catted stealthback. What can I say... this car rumbles... not too loud, not too quiet, and I can feel a REAL hp difference..

There's my 13,000 mile maintenence. Pads coming in the next few weeks... just because I want to be 100%... might as well go get SS lines and motul 5.1 fluid.

Thanks for all the help,

C.R.

This is utter nonsense. Synthetic oil is not necessarily any "thinner" than conventional oil. Granted, Mobil1 5w-30 is on the "thin" end of the 30-weight scale, and may have some consumption issues when used in an STi. But that doesn't mean that all synthetic oils will have that issue. If you do have consumption with the 5w-30 Mobil1, I'd suggest trying the Mobil1 5w-40 (T&SUV) or even the 10w-40 Extended Performance (EP) version if you want to stay in the Mobil oil product line.

Me, I'll be running "German" Castrol 0w-30 in my STi when I make the switch over to synthetic oil at the 10,000 mile mark. GC is a "thick" 30-weight oil that is very robust and has been a proven performer based on all of the positive used oil analysis' (UOA's) over on the Bob is the Oil Guy (BITOG) forums:

I had a WRX since March of 2001 and now my 05 STi. I went to Mobil synthetic at 10k miles. I have never had the car burn any oil. I have a got over 11k miles on my STi and I am still using dyno oil. The car does not burn any oil at all. The STi has had many dyno runs and upgrades to more than 300 whp on a dyno dynamics dyno- 80 whp over stock (and now back to stock) and runs flowlessly.

Doesn't the owner's manual have a list of what they service at specific mileage? I think they have lots of checking on things going on.

Cheers

Kevin h,
your listing of service intervals is helpful. But please don't spread mis-information about synthetic oil.

It is not thinner. Period. 30 wt is 30 wt. What synthetic is, is slipperier. (sp?). If you use it prior to the rings bedding in, the cylinders can glaze and this will cause above average oil consumption. So, the thing to do is wait until you've got 5K to 6K on the car before switching. (less if you really drive hard, as combustion chamber pressures will be higher and will press the rings more forceably against the cylinder walls increasing the break in speed)

Also, if you switch to synthetic from dino oil in a high mileage car, oil leaks can occur. This is very different from oil "use", which is burning the oil. Dino oil seems to make the seals swell better than synthetic. Not a problem if the car is switched to synth when reasonably new. But if you take a 100K mile 5 yr old car that has been run on dino oil and switch to mobil 1, it will leak like a sieve. (of course there's really nothing wrong with the oil leaking, it doesn't hurt anything.)

Given the PROVEN protection against wear and more significantly coking (look it up) that synthetic affords, it is incredibly foolish to recommend against synthetic oil for an STi owner.
