WRX making screeching noise

Hey guys,

I'm not sure where I would post this, but I need help. I don't know what it is, and I need your guys input on what you think the problem may be.

I have a 2005 Subaru WRX. Something crazy just started happening a couple days ago... I have recorded a video so you guys can hear what noises it's making and maybe help determine what the problem may be. Its like a scratching/screeching noise

Other things besides the crazy noises is:
-It's harder to get the car to start moving.
-When the car is screeching in 1st/2nd, it feels like my car is stuck
-I have to gas harder to force it out of the screeching sound to start driving
-It usually happens only in 1st and 2nd gear when driving from a stop.
-In 3rd-5th gear, the car will make random shutters like a heart beat almost.
-After driving, I smell some weird burning..

It has around 799xx miles so almost 80K miles. I've owned the car for 2 years and 2 months. I bought it with 59K miles and I have changed the oil every 3-4K miles with full synthetic mobil 1 oil. The last time I changed the oil was about 2500-3k miles ago, so it is due soon.

I believe it may be the clutch going out? But I didn't think the clutch would make these noises..... Kinda scared that this is a very serious problem. Please help me out with some info!

you need a clutch. the screech you're hearing is the throwout bearing. the smell and the behavior of the car are consistent with that.

i would get the flywheel resurfaced. there is no reason to replace it unless its damaged.


i am not a fan of lighter flywheels, myself, but lots of people are. do a search and weigh the pros and cons.

Ok. Replaced clutch today (including pilot bearing, throw out bearing, clutch itself and plate, and flywheel ok with resurface) and did everything to my knowledge correctly. But now I CAN'T get into gear when the car is ON.....wtf?? I can shift into gears when the car is off.. but when I turn it on in neutral, I can't put it into gear.

I can however, start the car in 1st gear, but the car will automatically start rolling as if the CLUTCH wasn't disengaging/engaging all the way... it's like if I floor the clutch pedal, the trans is not disengaging all the way. And when I try to shift while clutching, it'll grind gears.

Lastly...the noise (screeching) is still present. Ugh.... IDK what to do. Please help someone.

BUMP.... Re-did things and the TOB wasn't seated properly. Fixed it and now the clutch feels great. But the car is still screeching and jerking when I accelerate. I can barely get the car to 5mph before it starts jerking and screeching at me. IDK what it is.. Need help I'm going INSANE
