Wastegate muffling project

I did a lot of research on options for muffling my external wastegate and came across people running supertrapps and motorcycle mufflers, but I wanted something cleaner and well. . . less ghetto. I really wanted to tone down the noise on my EWG, but plumbing it back into my downpipe was in issue for a few reasons:

-I like quiet catbacks so I am running the SPT catback with 2.5" taper, so I was worried about the added backpressure requiring a new tune.
-I like the sound of the wastegate, just not the volume
-I want to keep removing the dp/up as hassle free as possible since it already sucks.

So I eventually started looking around for Porsche wastegate mufflers as some of them had dump tubes stock. I ended up finding this:

I am going to cut it up and weld it onto my grimmspeed dump tube and set the turn down to dump next to the corner in the stock downpipe. Just thought I would start this thread to keep you guys updated on how it goes and post videos when it is done as I know some people have been looking into something similar.

If this is street legal, does one also need to have the Ewg catted since it is exhaust gas?

I doubt you would pass an emissions inspection of any kind with a dump tube. I run e85 so I am emissions exempt.

Here is the muffler, guys. The turndown is not attached and I don't think it is necessary. I got under there and lined things up, it looks like I will just have to cut the angle off of the dump tube and weld the muffler on. It seems like it will fit nicely next to the downpipe and only hang about a half inch lower than the DP itself. I will probably make some kind of exhaust hanger attached to the downpipe to make it stable.

I emailed a couple of shops for a fabrication job .. at the very least I'm going to route a pipe further towards the back end of the car, but I might end up getting a small muffler thrown in, too.

I'll update this thread with whatever I end up doing just to help throw other people more information on this. my car is flashed now and I can go into boost .. good god it is f'ing loud right now, ridiculously loud, lol. I'm still glad I did it, though. it is boosting early and it is holding it strong!
It really is loud, isn't it? It sounds really loud in the car, but if you let someone else drive and hear it from the outside, the sound level is astounding. It's like a turbo sport bike with a straight pipe or something. I didn't want to go to the track and annoy the crap out of people and I don't like not being able to open it up around town due to fear of the cops three blocks away hearing it.

Car goes to the fab shop Tuesday to get the rear fenders pulled and have this muffler welded in. Was going to do it myself, but I am not the greatest welder and would like it to be as clean and OEM-like as possible.

Just got the car back. It sounds really awesome. You can still hear the wastegate, but it sounds deeper and less "sharp" when you get on the throttle. I will take some videos later tonight and post them up.

Here is a quick video from my phone with the windows down. The sound is really poor quality. In real life it sounds MUCH deeper. I will try with the GoPro this weekend and see if that sounds better. It is a much more desirable sound than the EWG without the muffler. It almost reminds me of the Subaru rumble which is interesting because I have the EL header. I would recommend this to anyone looking to make their EWG a bit quieter without completely getting rid of the sound or routing it back into the downpipe. No boost creep problems. The fabricator took some pictures of the setup, I will try to post them here later. Basically he extended the dump tube with a J bend and clamped the muffler onto the part of the dp that runs parallel to the ground.

I'm curious to see what your tuner thinks of it.

Any form of back pressure on a waste gate has pretty nasty effects on it's performance.
Logs show the boost is pretty much exactly the same at all intervals. No meaningful changes in any of the parameters I logged.

Mine dumps right out on the ground. Loud as hell. Scares children and old people. I love it. :D

I enjoyed mine for a while too, but it got old. The combination of EL header and EWG is just too loud and high pitch. Coincidentally, I am also in Boulder.

interesting, it has a very pulsey' sound. I think it'll be hard to capture the audio in a video - you may have better luck having someone record you flying by from the outside

my issue is fixed with a different hanger on the custom long dump tube, the other one was too rigid apparently. it still sounds like crap, but at least it's away from the engine bay and further behind the front seats now.
That is due to the 3-port EBCS being used as an interrupt solenoid. It's just a different method of controlling boost that causes the, "flutter" noise. The solenoid repeatedly opens and closes the wastegate to control boost. That is how it sounded before the muffler as well, just at a higher pitch and much more irritating. I will do some more logs when I get back to my car (I am out of town) and update you guys. I will also try to get more videos.

That's good. Were you checking your WGDC corrections? Or just boost levels?
No, I haven't done any extensive logging yet, just my basic logs for AFR/knock learning values, boost etc. I will log the WGDC when I get a chance. It really shouldn't add too much restriction though. I punched out the spark arresting screen in the muffler with a screwdriver and it is just a straight-through glass pack. Internal diameter of the muffler itself is 38mm at minimum, so probably the most restrictive part is the J-bend before the muffler, but the tubing diameter is over 40mm at that point and all the welding and bends are spot-on thanks to Scotty at MoFab in Denver. I doubt the total flow restriction is much more than just extending the dump tube.

I have a grimmspeed 3 port ebcs on mine and it doesn't seem to pulse as noticeably as yours. it definitely has some "pulse", but not as distinguished as yours. I was attributing that to the muffler you added.
It might have to do with the the way I plumbed my BCS lines or the fact that I run an equal length header. It had just as much flutter before the muffler. My catback is also pretty quiet, so it may just be that you hear more wastegate. This is a video pre-muffler

A little update here:

I took some logs the other day and in 5th a 3k-7k pull sees a max of 30% WGDC. Boost peaks at 18.5 and holds 15.5 to redline, just like before (over a mile altitude). I did notice my AF learning values are absolutely wild, but I think my front O2 is dying from my super ghetto, rich as hell winter gasoline tune or I have a leak in my IC hose. Wideband reads exactly what I want and I see 0 knock in WOT and minimal learned at tip in. Car is pulling like a champ with no real issues

I am a little concerned about the plastic surrounding the wastegate muffler melting. I would think it is good enough for some decent temps as two stroke pit bike exhaust gets pretty hot, but I am going to keep track of it. I am hitting the track on Sunday, so I will let you guys know how it holds up. I will also be under the car prepping the car tomorrow, so I will try to snap some pics of the plumbing. So far so good.
