Equilibrium tuning, there might be a good shop closer that I don't know about. My friend's 2004 WRX was his first tune and it is still running great for 10 years!
Considering a protune this time around for my new 15 STI. My 11 only went OTS stg2+ but want a little more for the new car. Is the protune really that much of an improvement though?
Also interested in protuners in the Bay Area as well. I live in a San Francisco area and the closest tuner from me is GST. However, I heard great things about Snail Performance and Equilibrium tuning so they might be worth the drive.
Put it this way, i live 45 minutes fromYimi sport, who some say is the best in ca. I have been tuned by both yimi and eq tuning. I drove six hours to ed bc its that much better.
I don't understand why you would want to run a MBC over a EBCS. I mainly tune every car with a 3-port which allows the ecu full control of the boost. Also for the Sti owners with SI-Drive it allows you have the select mode boost funtion giving you 3 boost settings to pick from on the fly. Also MBC do not have part throttle boost control like EBCS does on stock sized turbos. An MBC just want to make the boost it is set for all the time when the conditions are right with the ecu controlling the boost you won't have that problem. In my opinion tuning a stock size turbo with MBC is just lazy the stock ecu is more than capable of controlling the boost if the person tuning the car knows how to set it up properly.
If you dont understand why mbc is better, that is a little worrisome. You live near Ed. I am sure he can shed some light and help you understand. It is not lazy meathod. Its a much better mesthod. The whole point is what you said. It makes target boost much quicker. I love being able to hit higher boost at part throttle. Car feels much much stonger and snappier doen low. When i switched from ebcs, i kicked myself for not doing it earlier. Its that much better in terms of real world drivability.
Don't need any light shed on the subject. I have retune multiple cars that had MBCs on them that we switched over to a 3-port due to drivability issues the customer was having with their car. Also I know for a fact I can make a 3-port come on as fast if not a little faster compared to a MBC. Making higher boost at part throttle is very easy to do with a 3-port. You just have to tune the car for it pretty easy if you ask me. I believe a MBC takes away some of the features the SI-drive offers to the driver.
I wouldn't call MBCs garbage, and I certainly wouldn't regard Ed's tunes as less than excellent. Ed's tuning has sharp throttle response and when coupled with a manual boost controller it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Myself, I run an EBCS, but I wouldn't be opposed to running a manual boost controller so long as it was tuned by Ed.
Looking for a Protuner myself. I live in Half Moon Bay so I know I'm going to have to make a long drive regardless. Seems like both guys do a very nice job but might have different ways getting to similar results. For me my STI is a DD so I don't want to push the tune too much. Decisions Decisions Decisions....
