Exhaust sound levels

I'm looking for some help with exhaust sound levels. I had an Invidia N1 street with a Cobb downpipe on my '06 WRX, but that had way too much drone after a while. Before that I had a Cobb catback with a downpipe and that was good for long trips but a little quiet the rest of the time. So now I'm researching what exhaust I want for the '16 STI that I'm in the process of ordering. I've watched tons of YouTube videos but I know from experience that the videos always make it sound quieter. The ones I like the most right now are the Nameless with the 5" muffler and the ETS with the muffler. Can anyone tell me how these would compare to the Cobb and N1? Also I won't be putting a downpipe on the STI so that will keep it from being as loud. The main thing I'm looking for is minimal drone but gets louder when you get on it and doesn't get too much attention from the cops (when driving normally). Thanks in advance!

I'd love to go with an EWG! But that's something that I plan on doing after I've had the car for a while.

I've already been though 2 exhausts. I have a downpipe so that adds more noise. The q300 I had was too deep, too much drone no matter what. I currently have the Cobb and its overall louder than q300 but less deep but will still drone at certain rpm. It's still annoying to me.

I'm going to swap out the car back for stock and see how loud that is with the dp. Mind you the 2015 stock unit is much louder than the older models.
Yeah I remember how much of a difference the downpipe made on my WRX. And I've heard from other people the same thing you're saying about the Q300 drone. I'm definitely gonna stay away from it after hearing from you too, and having first hand experience of the N1 drone.

This helped a lot, thanks! I'd love to buy a used exhaust instead of new but it's hard to find the ones I want.

And after hearing you guys say the muffler deletes aren't too loud with the stock DP I'm thinking the Nameless 5" or ETS with mufflers won't be too bad. From the videos it sounds like they're not too loud till you get on it. Does anyone on here have the ETS with the mufflers? I really like how it sounds and the videos that ETS has make it seem like it's not super loud.

Thanks for the help everyone

Yea, the muffler deletes are perfect. So many people love the way it sounds. Obviously if you had a downpipe, it'll be a bit too loud. But, if you plan on staying near stock, they're a great option.

My personal hierarchy, from my experience.

stock>spt>invidia q300/perrin>invidia n1>cobb>corsa>tomei>nameless

This doesn't account for drone, just exterior noise.

 yeah I know at WOT they're all going to draw attention from the cops. I'm just looking for one that isn't going to get me a ticket when I'm driving around normally. I'm really tempted to get the nameless 5", I just hope it's a few notches down from the N1 with a DP. Plus the quality of the Nameless looks awesome.

personally...

not a fan of invidia.. n1 or q300

Cobb is great. not too loud or too quiet.

i was going to buy a tomei titanium expreme but i ended up going for the nameless CBE.
i like the dual exit better. That tomei exhaust is loud AF.

Like someone else stated in here the nameless set up is perfect and balanced. my 3.5" staggered muffler delete CBE started off brutal till it broke in. Normal crusing is quiet but noticable. Spirited driving it gets loud and aggressive. and a mash on the pedal to WOT it roars!

my fav mod. i get alot of compliments every where i go

I have the Cobb TBE and I have to say that every day is a bit different. When I am by myself, I love it most days. It doesn't drone too much and isn't obnoxiously loud. However, on cold starts its rather loud right away and most people comment on it being really loud.

Also, once you have passengers and you are taking a bit easy it seems to actually be louder at the lower RPM's than if you were to just normally drive it.

Overall, I am happy with it but it is slightly too loud for me. I even tried to dynamat my trunk floor and top shelf to hopefully help a bit with the in cabin noise level and my sub. Well, it only marginally helped on the exhaust (almost not at all) but did help my sub...

^This. Briee has said numerous times about how the Cobb + catted DP is too loud; me I have almost the same setup (I have the turbo-back Cobb exhaust, his DP is GrimmSpeed) and I think it's great. I regularly drive on the highway and I'm never bothered at any rev range, and I think it sounds great cruising or open throttle... but opinions on exhaust sounds are very subjective.

And online videos most of the time don't accurately represent the true sound in person. The video on Cobb's website is pretty accurate though, but that's only for the turbo-back.

Do not get the Tomei if u don't want attention. Even with a stock downpipe, this thing is pretty loud. It doesn't drone and sounds great from inside the car but it's damn loud when u hear it from the outside.

I do not have any info regarding usdm made exhaust but you can get a JASMA certified jdm made exhaust and you will get docile tone when cruising and great sound when wot like HKS or the Blitz.

agreed. Tomei is basically a straight pipe.

lol "CRAP"

I'm about to go onto my 4th iteration, HKS Legamax premium, picking it up next week.

It's decent price and apparently these type of JDM exhaust are gone through some DB testing "JASMA" and shouldn't be too loud. Unlike the U.S. counterparts which don't go through any testing at all.

It also has a resonance chamber as well to reduce drone.
