Clutch engagement clunk

Just got through reading over Stevesti's Clutch problems, but couldnt find an answer to mine.

When Engaging a gear, i have a pronounced clunk, whether i am just idling then slowly let the clutch out and introduce throttle, and even sometimes between shifts.

I started happening about a month ago, and never before that. Cold and warm weather this problem is present, and even when the car is warmed up.

I was thinking maybe transmission mounts or something? Can anyone enlighten me on this, or does anyone share this same problem? Thanks in advance,

Josh

I just noticed a similar problem as yours with mine lately. If I give it gas while letting out the clutch from a stop, it will sometimes result in a clunking noise. The problem is that the noise repeats a few times sometimes, other times it does just one clunk, and sometimes it doesn't do it at all. I'm confused, I was thinking since the DCCD in auto, it was just the difs resetting themselves to another setting. I notice no noises while turning the car though, so I don't think its CV related. My car only has 6k miles on it.

I noticed a clunk as well as of late. The last time was early this morning when I gave it some throttle in 1st, and went for a quick "performance-type" shift into 2nd. I never slam the shifter from 1st into 2nd, because I don't want to damage the syncros, but I did notice a clunk.

I don't know if this pertains to the thread, but does anyone else without the factory short shifter notice the 1-2 shift just seems really slow?

I think this has more to do with the feature that someone mentioned on here about how the transmission will not let you slam into the flywheel during aggressive shifting, thus, resulting in a inconsistent shift feel. Does your transmission clunk while engaging first at all?

This is exactly my problem, which is weird because your mileage is really low. I have about 52,000mi on mine. This leads me to believe that it might be normal!?!

No, I don't believe so.

With the stock clutch I would get a clunk from the back of my car when I shifted very quickly from 1st to 2cnd and let the clutch out fast. The clunk is the rear sub-frame bottoming out. I have purchased the whiteline rear bushing kit but have not installed them yet.

Have a freind ride in the back of the car and lie down on the seat. He will be able to listen just behind the center console and tell you if the noise is coming from the tranny or the rear end of the car.

I have switched to an Exedy stage 2 clutch and I now when ever I shift from 1st to 2cnd, sometimes from 2cnd to 3rd, I get a small clunk from the rear sub-frame. The stage 2's engagement is very sudden and can't be feathered.

Are you hearing the clunk only in the lower gears or during every shift?

Im fairly sure the clunk is from the rear diff....not the diff actually bottoming out on the sub-frame. Because this happens on very easy shifts too.

Ive gotten under the car and turned the driveshaft back and forth and the rear diff definitely is the culprit..atleast on my car it is.

I have this problem too. I was looking at another thread the other day that brought it up and I wanted to ask but didnt cause I figured somebody would hit me for not searching well enough. I learned from my searching that its normal and Subaru says its nothing to worry about. Nonetheless, it sux and I hear the Whiteline clunkkiller (or whatever) bushing kit will fix the problem.

So one more time from somebody who knows. What exactly causes this problem?

if the clunk coming from the rear diff area, a group-n rear diff brace will fix the problem.

I have the Klunk killer and this 'clunk' is totally unrelated to hard shifting. The noise is NOT from the rear diff hitting the carrier. It happens on very easy simple shifts. Im fairly sure its just drivetrain slack that unfortunately fully exposes itself in between shifts.....The slack allows velocity to increase inbetween gear sets, U-joints, Cv's etc when you let the clutch out up shifting. Hence the clunk

I have a clunk as well, it's really bad. I just had the ACT 6 puck installed with a lighter flywheel. And I'm not talking about the chatter of a stronger clutch!

Mine only occurs when I let the clutch out in first gear or reverse from a stop - when it's engaging it clunks and clanks really loud, it sounds like it's coming from the clutch area under the car. It's so bad it shakes the car! Yet sometimes, it's perfectly fine.

Of note, all the engine mounts are perfectly solid and in place. Anybody have any thing like this or any ideas what's wrong. Please help, it makes driving my car feel like it's a POS!

EDIT: Problem Solved! The little dust cover / rock guard at the bottom of the clutch area was rubbing only when the tranny shuddered a little when engaging - a quick pry of the screw driver to bend it down a little more and no more wretched noises!
