Hi Guys,

Trying to find out what is the best engine for tuning and strength.... is it the JDM 2.0 or the USDM 2.5?

The Usdm EJ25 will have more torque and power output, also it will spool faster since its has larger displacement. The JDM EJ20 is a high revving "8k rpm limit" machine with a little more aggressive cam profile, stock forged pistons etc. If you buy a complete jdm spec with turbo and all it will have a twin scroll unit that will make it spool a lot faster. as far as power output goes, I don't know :S.

It's a hard comparison. Comparing the newest version of each engine in stock form, they make about the same hp, but the 2.0l makes a little more torque (you read that right). They even make peak hp and peak tq at about the same points in the rpm range. The thing is they get better fuel in Japan so the 2.0l ej207 probably won't put down the same numbers in stock form with 91/93 octane fuel.

Assuming the ej207 has big port heads and the subaru twin scroll turbo setup, it should be a good match to the ej257 at stage 2 power levels, probably a little better. Here's what basically happens with both engines at stage 2 power levels.

ej257:
Peak tq. and peak hp. will get moved to the left in the rpm range compared to stock. You'll get a good bump in hp, but a larger bump in tq.

ej207:
Peak tq. will get moved to the left and peak hp. will get moved to right in the rpm range compared to stock. You'll get a good bump in tq., but a larger bump in hp.

Edit: v.8 and up jdm standard sti's all had big port heads and a ts turbo, but no forged piston. v.7 and some of the prior models had forged pistons, but they didn't all have ts scroll turbo or big port heads, that was reserved for the spec c. Those features might have been available as options on the standard v.7 sti.

Ok ... here is the question, this is why I started the topic:

I just love the 2.0 litre sound and revs...
YouTube - GRB? BLITZ NuR-SPEC C-Ti ????????

To me that sound is nearly as good as a ferrari and R35 GTR...

The twin scroll setup has a great sound note and ofcourse the lower capacity makes it to have a lower echo sounding note.

I have a JDM 2.0l GRB with HKS legalmax exhaust, downpipe, equal length headers, perrin fmic, perrin cold air intake, fuel pump etc. Sounds just like the Blitz video. No hint of a Subaru rumble at all, I like it, others dont and prefer the boxer sound.

My mate has the 2.5 version GRB, doesnt spool up any near as quick as the 2.0l twin scroll (when mine was factory) The 2.0l also revs to 8k no problems and for memory his redlines at 6.5k ( I could be wrong though)

I havent really meet any one here in NZ with a 2.5 with mods, the GRB not really big here yet as they are still really expensive 60k NZD.

I hear ya. It's kind of funny, regarding the ej207 you can mention the superior cylinder heads, 8k rev limit, bb ts turbo system, etc. compared to the ej257, but most owners here in the states would still prefer the 2.5. I think this is because most US owners have never experienced an ej207. People here are too hung up on the "there's no replacement for displacement" adage and the rumble. If you did a poll I'd bet the rumble would be the number one reason why people by these cars .
