But the larger scoop could also be simply a styling/marketing feature (like the coat hanger wing) to differentiate it from a standard WRX. Who's to say that the Sti HAS to have the larger scoop? Suggesting that it NEEDS the large scoop to keep cool is speculation. Maybe it does. Maybe it's just marketing. I'd like to see some data showing higher IC temps or lower hp numbers using the smaller scoop. Or something that shows the Sti needs a larger volume of air in relation to speed for the IC to be effective.
What you are saying could be true. But are you willing to take that risk?
There are two reasons why althought what you said could be true, I would have to disagree with you.
1. If the smaller scoop could be used for the same performance. Why didn't Subaru simply used the smaller scoop and cut cost there, instead of making a limited set of larger scoops? Everything else on the car shows that Subaru cut cost on style (form) and focus on performance (function). For example, Subaru decided to not include a stereo but kept DCCD.
2. If the bigger scoop is just for looks, is the intercooler water spray just for fun? Are you also telling me that the water spray isn't there for function? You can't see it, so it's not for styling . . . I guess people really think its fun pushing that button. Gee . . . Subaru rather pay more for the light-weight windsheild rather than loosing the ?? gallon water spray tank in the trunk. Personally, I don't believe that is the case. I believe the large hood scoop is not sufficient for prolonged periods of WOT or on a demanding hot day. The water spray is needed in additional to the larger airflow through the larger hood scoop.
Of course, my reasoning may be as big of a speculation as yours. But I choose to believe my reasoning, not because it my reasoning, but because I'm not willing to take the risk of your reasoning.
