AMR Stage 1 - such good gains?

Hey all,

Was looking at AMR's and Perrin's website.

AMR Stage 1 gains 60whp with a ots map and intake.

Perrin Stage 1 gains 30-40whp with ots tune.

Perrin Stage 2 gains 50-60 whp with ots map and a tbe.

Is the AMR really this good? I thought an intake didn't do much for the car until you were putting down big hp number's. AMR's numbers would suggest otherwise.

I guess in short, why wouldn't you go AMR?

Stage 1 = about the same gains as Stage 2 perrin. Granted the AMR stage 1 is more costly than perrin stage 1 due to the intake and price of the AMR tune, but significantly less than perrin stage 2 (and nets ~same gains).

right. so that is sort of my point. AMR gets the same gains with only intake - no tbe. Stage 1 AMR is $800 less than stage 2 perrin.

Given this price difference, I am trying to understand why one would go with the perrin stage 2 over amr stage 1.

Aggression plays a role in this.

You can make a stage 1 tune more aggressive, but (and all of you can feel free to jump down my throat if what I'm saying is heresy) with aggression comes entropy when it comes to car by car results. A protune is a better way to make gains than an OTS map, and even then tuners will usually stay somewhat on the conservative side (this depends on the tuner and your preference).

It's pretty common that Perrin is more aggressive than Cobb with their OTS maps, and it sounds like AMR is more aggressive than Perrin. There's no free lunch though; the more power from OTS and minimal mods, I would argue the greater the risk.

Its not like they tested the two maps side by side on the same dyno, on the same day, yada yada. My guess is they are using a different type of dyno and maybe a little bit more agressive tune, higher octane, better conditions, etc. Not likely they are just that much better at tuning.

I went from HM stage 1 wich was very nice to AMR stage 2 and i am very happy with the outcome in the 300 range. But like it has been posted, it depends what dyno you will use
When i was stage 1 i had it dynoed at 245 and then right before i went stage 2 it was in the 230 on a different dyno.

Had amr stage 1 from 2500 miles or so to about 4500 then went with their "stage 2" set up. Their stage 1 felt insane over stock (i didn't load other maps to compare) Went stage 2 a few weeks ago and their stage 2 felt insane compared to their stage 1. Final numbers were 302hp 350tq @20psi. Stock was 200hp 225tq. And isn't their dyno the lowest reading? or one of... Great produts, service, POWER!!!

I went there for the protune so i'm stage 2 with their protune. stock to stage 2 was +101hp and +125tq But i would have to say their ots map on stage 1 was pretty awesome when compared to stock. Made it a whole diff beast. stage 1 to stage 2 was even better!!

Basically call shenanigans on any HP claims by any aftermarket manufacturer. They are always on the "optimistic" side. AMR seems to be slightly more than most though...

Another happy AMR Stage II customer here. All of this was done a week and a half ago...AMR TBE, AMR Big MAF (CAI), AMR TMIC, & AMR custom pro-tune...302whp/355wtq...and this was a very conservative tune, per my request. That is a 101whp and 130wtq gain over the stock setup, all on the same dyno. There are definitely no 'shenanigans' going on here. Their products are beautifully made, and I highly recommend this shop.

^^ Those are regular stage 2 numbers though... I'm calling out the huge numbers the OP gave for stage 1 (60whp from the OTS map + intake). I just cant see how thats possible with stock exhaust. Unless your somehow cranking boost up to 21+... I'm not seeing it, and if it is being done somehow, I dont see it being safe... I'm not dogging the company or their products, just the claims for Stage 1.

No. You can reach 60whp easily with just an intake and Rob's OTS map but you can't sustain that to redline (no one can because the turbo isn't pushing enough air that's why EVERYONE's dyno just tapers off at around 5k). Actually what I find funny is Rob's dyno reads a lot lower than some of the other vendor's you are talking about (not to say Perrin and Cobb don't do a good job, they most certainly do).

Also Rob's tune isn't as aggressive as you think but his Big MAF intake is a lot nicer than most when properly scaled! (pushes more air and that's what this game is all about)

Numbers don't lie here....ask around...

I went AMR Stg1 ots map:

from 205hp/225tq
To 254.3hp/298tq
So I got 50 more hp BUT 73 more tq @17psi

Stg2 Stealth with stock muffler, headers and uppipe, pump:
To 302.6hp/380tq @21psi

I had another race muffler added to try and rid a Vibration I was getting at 3K rpms. It helped a bit but I may have a loose heat shield or something. Also just changed plugs to one step colder. Will get re-Dyno'ed this week (same dyno) should help with HP. 93 oct.

Latest Dyno: New plugs, second muffler/resonator added.
323HP/380TQ. Nice DD now. ;)

Dang! That is what I like to see on a stock turbo. I think I will look into amr a bit more
