2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition Bows in L.A.

Complete with Spec C wheels and uprated suspension...

Too bad it's not available in yellow too, but this is the first time we got our own sort of "Spec-C" package stateside!

EDIT: Pricing has been announced!
LA 2009: Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition is sportier, less expensive — Autoblog

The new model is priced $2,000 lower than the base price of the 2010 WRX STI and will be limited in production. They seem to take out a lot more than they put in, although this seems to me to be more like a TR than a Spec C thing. Still, I like the idea, and the wheels are awesome.

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

This seems disappointing to me. Subaru had a chance to offer something 'special' but about all they got right were the wheels. I wonder how much all of the downgrading saves on weight? It doesn't seem like enough to make a difference. They could have added an aluminum hood, better seats and done those downgrades and been closer. Of course they would, IMO, had to have gone further than what they did with the suspension. Their wording says it all: "The suspension for the new model is adopted from Japan's domestic-market WRX STI spec C model. " The key word here is 'adopted'. Stiffer springs, better bushings and a thicker sway bar should have all been standard fair.

I don't get why they want to push the STi upmarket. Just keep it hard core and give us the Legacy STi for the guys who want something to upgrade to instead of Audi.

I think Subaru had a real chance to do something special with this and they didn't go far enough again. Maybe this one will be cheaper, but special makes me think special, not just below base model ala TR.

goddamit yes, this "limited" edition STi should come with better seats, a la s203, ball bearing turbo, ic spray, aluminum hood and the gold 6 pot brembos, this just looks like a STi with gray rims, FAIL subaru FAIL

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

zp2063 said it best. Special to me means that this thing should be top of the line performance here, not slightly better but sacrificing all those amenities.

Legacy STi or RA-R stateside, please!

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

At least it's a step in the right direction. I'm glad they aren't coming out with something like the automatic A-line instead...
Agreed. Hopefully it's around $1K less than the standard model, otherwise fail. I'm curious to see how much weight is saved although it doesn't sound like much. IMO the only worth-while feature that's lost is the HID headlights - I could care less about the other stuff (I had no idea the standard version had 10 speakers, excessive).

The suspension that is "based off the spec c" should be standard on all STI's as it's only slighty different than the standard suspension (c'mon Subaru, really? Make it easy on yourselves). Lastly this really should have come with at least the aluminum hood, perhaps even the ic spray. I could really care less about the STI recaros (leather and they don't even have proper harness holes  - a compromise for a performance seat if you ask me).

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

This special edition isn't very special.

Don't companies usually come out with the "special edition" right before they give a model the big ol' axe?

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

THIS IS PATHETIC!!!! This is what Subaru offers us???? No Recarros??? No aluminum hood? No push button start? No IC sprayer?? And what a weak attempt at suspension mods. I am starting to lose my confidence in Subaru and the decisions they are making...... What about a damn STI sedan???

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

This is kind of disappointing. Like a few people above already mentioned, they should have brought the Recaro seats, IC spray and aluminum hood. Also what is purpose of deleting the indicator lights on the side mirrors, they looked very nice. I wonder what the price will be.

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

Much more to lose than to gain.

All that springs (19% stiffer? come the F on...) and sways can be had for less than a grand, including install and wheel alignment, and look at how much they took away.

The wheels might look nicer but I'm betting these are cast alloy's with STi center caps not forged like BBS wheels.

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

so.. lemme get this straight...

new wheels.. WoAh DuDe AwEsOmE!!!
1mm larger swaybars? joke. Those will get upgraded anyways.
manual ac controls.. how does this change anything?
4 speakers instead of 10.. congrats. you lost maybe 20 lbs.
color matched side mirrors??.. my 08 has matching side mirrors.
Stiffer Subframe bushings.. 'bout time, but this was a $50.00 + 1 hour fix on my 08.
better springs.. i guess thats good but.. ehhh Those will probably get upgraded.

I mean.. at least it's marginally better then wheels and a body kit like how you get when you choose a civic SI.

LOS ANGELES — Performance purists will not be overlooked by Subaru at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show as the Japanese automaker introduces the 2010 Impreza WRX STI Special Edition. Subaru said the special model is bound for showrooms in early spring with an initial limited run of 125 units.

looking at the pics from Insideline - and im wondering, is SOA just "importing" the JDM WRX STi "20th Anniversary Edition"...??

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza STI Special Edition

Subaru said the special model gets halogen rather than HID headlights; a single-disc CD player; a four-speaker audio system instead of the six-CD, 10-speaker system; manual air-conditioning instead of automatic climate controls and body-color side mirrors. The suspension for the new model is adopted from Japan's domestic-market WRX STI spec C model. Details include a 1-millimeter-thicker rear stabilizer bar, stiffer rear subframe bushings and a set of upgraded and retuned springs.
the suspension can be achieved with aftermarket parts, but if the weight savings is significant, good job subaru.

they should throw in forged pistons instead of all that crap

i agree wtf. why dumb down the car?

i say keep all the features it currently has, add recaros and keyless ignigiton, give it the carbon fiber roof, and add about 50 ponies and forged internals

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition (with Spec-C parts!!)

I think adding the Spec C suspension is a step in the right direction - all of the reports I've read about the JDM Spec C indicate that the new suspension greatly improves handling - but this is something that should be on ALL STIs. I don't understand why this warrants a special edition. I don't care about the stereo or the wheels but I want my HIDs.

Toyota seems to be interested in getting back in the sports car market again (LFA, AE86) so let's hope their involvement with Fuji Heavy Industries leads to more performance emphasis on product development for Subaru.

Does it say it actually *is* the spec-c suspension? I read it as 'based' off of, which to me means watered down for USDM. I might be wrong though.

Wait..... what? So we "get" inferior headlights, inferior sound system (cause you know, our stock sound is AWESOME!), inferior AC, and ermm.... modifications that any enthusiast would do himself.

And you KNOW this "special edition" will cost more than our current model...

Subaru? WTF! You say "Performance purists will not be overlooked." I think you just underestimated us, instead! The weight loss will be MINIMAL, if any! Oh wait, sorry... I know our HIDs weigh about 25lbs a bulb....

Excuse the sarcasm, guys, but the STI needs bigger changes than this, don't you think?

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza STI Special Edition

I would hope one wouldn't be made to pay more for less in this case. It would not be logical for this version to be more expensive than a typical model which could technically be had at the same time with more options standard.

I mean, why not just buy the new model year of the current version in that case? I hardly think the rarity alone will suffice as reason enough to charge more. If so, one would have to be a complete imbecile to fall for a scam of that magnitude.

Lets just hope it will be priced like the Evo RS was when it came out compared to the standard model that was made typically at the time.

Re: 2010 Subaru Impreza STI Special Edition

What the heck is Subaru thinking??? I feel insulted by the decision to produce this Spec C wannabe!! What about the aluminum hood, IC Sprayer, or how about the damn Recaros. I am starting to think my next vehicle will be coming from another brand!! This car is a JOKE!!!!!!!!!
