I have been reading a lot about people tearing the hell out of their transmissions in the WRX... can anyone give me some information on its capabilities or problems that people are having? Supposidly, there are quite a few serious failures..

First, it's become popular to say that the WRX has a weak tranny. Whether or not that's true depends upon what you mean by weak.

In the vast majority of cases where the tranny goes kaput, driver abuse is to blame. People like to abuse a car like the WRX. It's fun.

Probably a lot of people are wasting first gear in particular trying to dump the clutch at 5k rpm. Secondarily I'd guess that people are slamming too hard into 2nd gear, but since second gear is pretty tall, it probably will survive.

Also remember that most people never have problems with their cars, and as such they don't post "My WRX ran fine again" to every BB they can find. In other words, take what you hear from the internet and from friends with a grain of salt.

then where do I discuss this? I was just asking to find out what people think of the tranny and if there are problems with individial owners.... are you some kind of SOA agent (no offense intended).

I found several articles related to "glass" trannies, but it seems that those people were dumping the clutch at 7K, and that is quite a bit of abuse

DOES anyone know the torque limitations/specifications of the transmission in this car?

thanks

No, I think Titanium Samurai was referring to posting these kinds of technical discussions in the "STi General" part of the forum, under an appropriate thread, or a new one if one does not exist. Rather than posting it in the place designated for anonymously sourced info, e.g., Subaru Insider postings.

I honestly don't think a question about the WRX tranny belongs in the "STi General" section either, maybe if this was about the STi tranny it would. When I want to read about WRX stuff I go to i-club, actually local Subaru stuff. When I want to read about STi related stuff I come here.

Every thread? Stop exaggerating and mean what you say.

I like your optimism. I hope we are correct in assuming that the WRX tranny is not the one we get on the NA STi.

We better not get the WRX 5spd in the STi. My willingness to pay a premium for the STi is with the assumption of getting a full STi, including the STi 6spd. Emissions or ECU I could see being a little different but that is minor, anything else performance wise and I will not spend the money, especially anything over $30k.

I agree with you about the tranny. Not that the 5sp is bad, it just doesn't belong on the STi. But, does that mean that you agree with me that some WRX stuff is ok to have here on the STi forum at least until the specs are officially announced.

Until STi Specs are released...

I'll add my voice to that.

If the STi comes with the regular WRX tranny, then I'm not getting an STi period. Instead I would very strongly consider getting a WRX over an STi.

However, something tells me we may not have to worry about that issue at all. If anything the STi we will get will probably resemble the Euro version very closely.

I will speculate. Subaru could justify the 6sp tranny on the STi for reliability reasons alone. Add to that the customers lost with the 5sp and the decision becomes fairly easy to make. The STi needs the 6sp tranny to be successful.

My point was that until Subaru officially releases the NA STi Specs. We don't know for sure how much of the WRX discussions are applicable. Further, all of this thread should be in STi General.

Now talking about the STi and mentioning the WRX where it is relevant is one thing, but asking specific WRX questions is another. I have even brought up a reference to the WRX a couple times myself.:) Since this thread is originally about the weak WRX tranny, no I don't think it should be in the STI General section.

Are you saying that we should bury our sentiments about the 5 sp Tranny in the Off Topic Forum; where Subaru representatives are unlikely to surf? :(

How about a compromise? Occasional discussion about WRX problems in so far as we hope to see them dealt with in the STi, is OK for now. After Subaru officially releases the STi spec's and the 6 sp is standard equipment, then WRX specific stuff, like the 5 sp will be Off Topic Forum material only.

We are essentially in agreement: this site specializes in the North American STi and NOT the WRX. Therfore, our posts should reflect that. 8)
