Well,

I do not know what to think. My dealer says that it does not work this way. I am top on their list, if I take what they get. They say that there is no Vehicle Order Number (VON). Even though I gave them a $500 deposit...

Not sure what to do.

I ordered Blue with Gold from the salesperson, months ago, but now they tell me the first four they are getting are all coming with silver...

I suggested I could use my prodrive wheels, letting them keep the silver until they get a car with gold, but they though the car may be labeled with the color of the wheels, so maybe they can't do that.

I trust them, but I wonder if they are telling me the whole story?

what to do? what is the real deal?

You're getting screwed. They haven't ordered a car for you and it doesn't sound like they are going to.

I don't have my VON, but I can promise you when working with a reputable dealer, they order a car with your specific options (have they asked you what options?) and they will tell you when it has been ordered (mine went in Saturday) and when it should be there.

Find a new dealer.....

I respectfully disagree with CloneGTS' comments. (no offense intended). It may work that way in KS, but in NE we seem to march to the beat of a hidden, secretive drummer. My dealer, who's always been as forthcoming as I could hope for, found out about 3-4 weeks before arrival what he was due to receive - and just got his VIN# about 1 to 2 weeks after that. I'm not terribly sure about the VON#, but FWIW I'm #1 (since Jan.) and am not receiving my black/silver in June like I was hoping. From what I've heard the majority of the cars coming to the NE in the 2nd allocation (July delivery) have silver wheels, so that may be working against you. My suggestion would be to take the blue/silver and swap the wheels out with a fellow STi owner....could be a fun road trip! Best of luck....

Hmmmm..., I never thought about the possability that the NE region could be running things differently from the rest of the country. I doubt that they are run differently, but I can't say that they are not. From all of my expierences, the dealer should submit YOUR requests to Subaru, at which point the deliver a car mfg'd to those specifications.

Again, I don't work in NE....

did you at least get an order form with the deposit? when i did my deposit, they filled out the particulars. i never got a VON or VIN. i did visit my dealer regularly to get status updates. at one meeting, he asked what color combo i wanted. i told him and i saw what others on the list wanted. in the first shipment, at least two of us got what we ordered: white/gold, blue/gold. i have to believe this is not luck; i.e. they ordered what i requested.[/quote]

this is the part where i look like a moron, because I can't honsetly say whether they charged my credit card the $500 bucks. I need to go back and check.

The thing that made me think they were doing everything by the book is that they actually DID call me with my color preferences, so I assumed this would be what i got.

Hmmm. in any case, i am #1 on their list, and guess i will take blue with silver and hope to trade wheels with someone. luckily, i have some gold prodrive wheels from my 2003 WRX, and can run those for now - keeping the silver ones with no miles.

If anyone wants to trade, lemme know!!!

Color preferences are one thing....but did they ever as about port options? Dimming mirror, wheel locks, security system? If not, they aren't tayloring a car just for you.

I have my car on order from Jim Miller Subaru in Cedar Rapids, IA.

I don't know a thing about NE dealers. However they do it.....if they can't get you EXACTLY WHAT YOU ASK FOR, whether it is the only way they can do it or not, I'd tell em I'm taking my business elsewhere in the country. If someone in KS can get an STi with exactly what he wants, why shouldn't someone in NE?

I've heard, but I'm no expert, that in each allotment, it first gets broken into the diferent regional groups, and then the top dealers get first color choices, so they can pick and choose the colors people have on order. if that is the case, and you are shopping at a less popular dealer, it may be influencing why some people are able to specify exactly what they want and others are having to take what is offered.

But again, I don't work for Subaru so I don't really know, :)

Regarding orders, here's my NE experience: Dealer seems very honest, but honestly isn't getting good data from Subaru of New England. I was #3 in line, asking for Blue with Silver wheels. They said right from the start they can't control what they receive 100%. Some time ago I rec'd a survey from Subaru asking what my preferences would be for car and wheel color. I'm guessing that the factory production colors were based on the responses. Sooo, of the 35 cars sent to New Enland on the first boat, they only had so many body / wheel combos. So I you chose one that wasn't available, second allocation for you. I'm lucky, my car should be arriving tomorrow at the dealer. But still, they're not sure. Of the 2 allocations, 1 is coming in tomorrow and they're not sure which....

According to my dealer a VON is a vechicle "order" number. It simply means there is a generic vehicle (STI) associated with the VON. Once the ship arrives in port a specific STI is allocated to you (hopefully your chosen color and then you get that "indentified" STI's VIN.

More or less. The VON is proof that your Order has a Number(been placed for building) Once the cars arrive at port, they then pick a color/color that matches what you choose and assign you that VIN. Then they add your options and shipp it!

Bingo....so if you have a VON...they should be picking from the boat load of cars and picking out your color combo...then customizing it with port options.

How would SONE work it that "well, we don't have blue/silver on this boat, but here, send him a black/gold and tell him to bend over" ????

It has been said by Murley and my dealer, as well as many others, that a dealer simply gets an allocation. "Hey....you can order an STi now." The dealer then places the order for exactly what he wants.
You are correct!

This was my experience:

I got the call from my dealership on Monday to stop by and verify my order. He had a sheet with three lines of text. The first line listed the four body colors, the second wheel colors, and the third options. He circled the ones I wanted. I even changed my color from my original sales order - from Blue/Gold to White/Gold. Yesterday he showed me the pipeline with my order listed with VON# and the color/options I requested on Monday.

Also, the pipeline said est delivery date of Jul 03. A more specific date will be listed when it's closer to STi delivery time.
