For those anxiously awaiting the STi, I have a question for you: Since many of you are holding on to your RSs, why don't you just "STi-ify" your RS? Add a Prodrive WR suspension and a turbo, and you're handling damn near as good as a STi, have less weight, and probably faster or just as fast.

Is it just the warranty? Is it "the whole package"? Is it the fact that it's a much better base to safely add HP to?

I'm waiting, too, but have been considering getting an RS in the meantime, and if I ended up doing the turbo and suspension mods, I might find that I fall in love with it.

Anyway, just wanted to spark some conversation!

Why am I not turboing my RS? Here is why:

Warranty, um kinda, see my plans below: ...

And cost. Yes I said cost. The STi will be a much better base for mucho-power mods. I eventually want to get up to 350+HP. With the RS I would need:

Turbo kit, electronics: 6000.00
Dog box tranny, upgraded diffs: 8000.00

So thats 14,000, and we haven't talked brakes, suspension, seats, lower compression pistons, programmable ecu or any other thing that would be needed or wanted.

With the STi you get a transmission and motor able to take 26PSi boost stock out of the box no problems. See SCC this month for more on that, they are using the STOCK STi 6-speed and pumping 26PSi of boost through the engine with NO problems. They say it's ready for up to 29PSi. They figure that they are getting about 380HP out of 26PSi.

Plans for the STi:

Programmable ECU, set boost at ??
Race Tires
Possibly coil-overs

Yep, if you're gonna get 350hp out of it, the STi is definitely going to be a better base. And cheaper as well all things considered.

Yes, if I do get a STi, it will not be 265hp for long.

i know in australia the wrx is far less feature packed than the sti, however the sti will cost ~AUD$15k more than the WRX, so "up-specing" could be an option, but i still dont think it will have the same appeal.

main reasons for me choosing the sti over wrx:
-brembo brakes
-front lsd
-forged pistons, stronger bottom end and conrods
-6sp gearbox (close ratio)
-sti interior
-resale value

argh! i can't wait.

I've spent some time looking into supercharging an RS. There's a company in Colorado Springs that makes a kit for it.

That looked like a really good idea a couple years ago. Now that the WRX is here and the STi is on the way - not so much..

And I don't know if the tranny would take it. Although I imagine an extra 40-50 hp & torque wouldn't be a problem. Just like I would think the WRX could handle that much more.

Well, I would think about getting an RS (probably an older one say 97,98) and rallying it.

Other than that the STi is the way to go. Granted it is still the same displacement as the base WRX, but its a tougher engine and the tranny alone makes the STi worth it.
