1. My family has had five Subaru's, including my 2000 Impreza RS and 1985 GL Wagon. All have been very reliable, with the GL Wagon posting over 240K miles.

2. Yeah, the EVO might be the faster car stock, but I would rather spend money on a overall nicer car that I can actaully drive daily.

3. You can fix some of the things in the STi that make it "slower" than an EVO. I would rather spend my money on fixing things performance wise than otherwise.

4. I don't trust Mitsu. I have friends that have Mitsu's. I have ridden in and driven many Mitsu's including Lancer, Mirage, Galant, Eclipse and Montero- and my overall feeling is that they are less reliable in the long run than a Subaru. The Montero's especially suck. Mitsdu also witheld saftey information leading to a huge recall in Japan. Think Ford/Firestone was bad? Mitsu was actually shown to cover things up..

5. I already ordered an STi, plus Mitsu dealers around here want ridicoulus deposits NOW,

That is all- what is your reasons?

Regarding point 5, I couldn't agree more. When I called the Mitsu dealerships, and basically explained what an EVO was, and that, yes, they will be getting them, you could actually feel the transformation from clueless salesman into greedy, bloodsucking salesman. It was an amazing thing to behold.

Now, I'm not saying Sube dealers everywhere are better, but the ones I've dealt with are.

I have no first-hand knowledge of Mitsu's, but when everybody brings up the reliability issue, it's hard not to believe there's something to it. And when you're talking about a 2 liter engine making 260 - 280 hp, strong previous examples of reliability from that manufacturer would be nice. Subaru has that.

I haven't totally ruled out the EVO yet, but the more I think about everything, the more I'm leaning back towards my first choice (the STi). Guess we'll see. Mitsu would have to impress the heck out of me, I'd have to get MSRP or below, and Subaru would have to be pretty disappointing, in order for me to get one.

In defense of the EVO, the AYC and especially ACD are pretty amazing sounding pieces of technology.

I am still a tiny bit conflicted. It would probably be easier if I, like you JJ, had friends with Mitsu owners with bad experiences. And witholding safety information? I never heard about that. What did they do exactly?

my friend had a Mitsu eclipse. 95 if i remember right. At 82K miles his transmission basically split in half. I saw that car fall apart basically. I was thinking of a VR-4 instead of the subie but after watching his eclipse fall apart I decided to rule mitsu out for a while.
just my $.02 worth.

Well when it comes to Mitsu I own the New Montero Sport when it came out in 1998. I never had a problem with it...well until...in my 16 month of ownership I when to the dealer for routine service and 15 minutes after leaving there my truck burned up. Total loss. Dealer or Mitsu reliability? Dunno...but the truck toasting real good that evening.
