When to worry about timing belt?

1982 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  mr shickadance
I have an 08 STi hatch with 53,800 miles on it. When should I start to worry about replacing the timing belt (normally around 60k?)? Any horror stories, or do the belts on these generally last a while?

I just don't want to end up ruining the engine because money is a little tight and I still need to worry about snow tires and other stuff

personally, about 10,000 miles before the manual says the TB should go. why? a little money now, saves a lot of money later.

but that's just me, my friend's 2004 forrester is on 168,000m on the original timing belt and about 167,000 on spark plugs.

I will post pics of the plugs if you are interested in the plugs they were tremendous

How are you using the word 'tremendous' in this instance?

Good or Bad?

It's a known fact that plugs swell a great deal after so many miles.
Manufacturers are very anal with just about everything.... with good reason.

105k miles, easy.
Resurrecting an old thread here, but what is the manufacturer's recommendation to replace the TB?

bad.

Looked like they were gapped to at LEAST a half a centimeter, but prolly more.

the tip was not a tip, it was about as blunt as the broad side of an M&M. How they were able to initiate a spark is a testament to the spark plug company because my god, I would have guessed these plugs could not have functioned 30k miles earlier.

btw, for what it's worth, that car is still going strong on the same timing belt and the miles are just shy of 190k

head is cracked, but apparently not enough to cause major problems as it does not overheat, and drives perfectly fine.
