Never owned a car that anyone would be inspired to race against from stoplight to stoplight, but think it will become a common occurence once I get my STI. Due to the fact that I don't know anything about any other cars, what cars should I watch out for on the street? You don't have to tell me not to race vipers (or can I?), but what are some cars I might encounter that I shouldn't even attempt to race, or cars that I should look to race for an easy ego-boost. Before going into any diatribes/flames, I am first and foremost a safe driver and I DO realize that racing isn't always about the car...

I hear talk about being able to hang with corvettes and others... anyone feel like enlightening me?

dont race Cobras, dont race Vipers or Corvettes in st8 line... On curves u can take any of those.. I would only race M3 and M5 if u know how to shift or plan to mod your STi....
Wanna win? Look for Acura type S, 330, Z350, any riced civics, RSX, integras etc...
be careful with Nitro's cars.. they r easy to spot, when U see them take off like maniacs in 2nd gear...

I guess I just don't get street racing. It's not like there is a penalty for losing to a better car, is there? If you're going to race (and yes, you should go to a track or autocross to do this, not on the street, but regardless...), why not just race anyone willing? Personally, I get a big grin when the RX-7 who isn't really even trying just flies off into the distance regardless of my wide open throttle. Nothing like seeing a good car doing what it does well. On the other hand, my 8.x second 0-60 car will beat almost every car I meet -- because nobody bothers trying (not that I'm trying to race either -- I just like to wind up the car).

Would looking at 0-60 times be enough for most stoplight races? It depends on the street I suppose -- I'd probably quit before 60, but I don't get tickets either (OK, 1 in the last 15 years). Picking up R&T and checking out the 0-60 times could tell you a lot, assuming stock cars and equal launches (ignoring that cars differ in how much they gain by abusive launching), and assuming R&T doesn't get much different than the 4.8s 0-60 time that's been bantered about for the STi. Let's see... Aston Martin Vanquish, BMW M3, M5, Z8, new Corvette, Ferrari 550, Ford SVT Mustang, Mercedes SLK32 AMG, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, Panoz Esperante, 911 Carerra/Targa, Ruf 3400S all will be fun to race. McLaren F1, Corvette Z06, Viper SRT-10, Ferrari F40/F50/360, Porsche 911 Turbo/GT3/GT2, Ruf 911-based, Lamborghini Diablo/Mucielago, Lotus Esprit V8, all will be fun to listen to as they leave you behind. Mighty good company.

Don't try to race Z06's, Viper's, Porsche 911 GT2 Turbos, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, McLaren F1, Champ Cars, F1 cars.

With this said, don't street race but go to the track, etc.

Anything else is fair game for short acceleration runs IMHO, if it wasn't illegal or extremely dangerous.

Off topic .. but a very interesting Honda UK Commercial

The SRT-10 Viper is listed as having a 0-60 time of 4.1s, the Z06 at 4.5s. 4.5s maybe, but 4.1s? That seems like some pretty extreme mods and you'd likely win merely because the other driver didn't try hard enough. All of these times are assuming an abusive launch with multiple practices, so I'm sure the driver part would play a huge portion on the street since most people wouldn't go all out. We still don't know the R&T 0-60 time for the STi -- typically car manufacturers are a little conservative on their times (maybe they assume a halfway car-friendly launch), so I'm also hoping we may end up with something a little faster than 4.8s.

Going all out on the launch of one of these cars seems a bit dangerous on the street. Hence I just assumed each driver would back off the same amount. Oh, I imagine if you really want to do well, use Victoracers or Hoosiers as your street tire to get a bit more traction in the dry. Just keep some good rain tires around.

As JJ points out, when you see the F1 car next to you at the stop light, give Schuey a big wave and don't expect to win. :)

P.S. When people say Cobra here, are they talking about the Shelby or the Mustang? The former is incredible, the latter ought to be on par with the STi (assuming stock for both).

Police STi!

smack the turbo neon again and again
I can't wait til I see them in my STi

and as for what cars you can race, dude...your car is basically faster than 95% of the cars on the street

I still think the best race would be with the EVO since they've always been competing for generations

Now think logically..
Viper and Corvetter are lighter than STi, have V8 and V10, displacing 5.7 and 8.0 liters and both have excess of 400 hp..
Have fun racing them on st8 lines.. Same with Cobra..
U better wait for snow or rain and race them then, too bad u wont see any on that weather..

If the STi is anywhere near as fast as I've been hearing, I would think that vipers, cobra's, z06's, and cars in that class would be fair game if you were a good driver, and some minor mods.

The Z06 is listed at 3.9 0-60. 4.1 seconds would be very doable with the STi, with certain mods of course, but nothing too extreme would be required. The APS RT Spec kit for the WRX was rated at 320 hp and they quoted 0-60 in 4.35 and 12.8s in the 1/4.
