OK, I have been made more aware of WRX owners having problems with a weak tranny. Granted I am sure a lot of this is people hitting the car hard with high rev shifts and drags, etc. The AWD system cannot handle this abuse very long, BUT.....

What can be done? I mean if I buy an STi what can I do to mod the tranny to make it indestructible? I am thinking cryo treatment, etc, but how much does this cost and how hard is it to remove the tranny and put it back to together?!

One thing with the STi tans is it is a lot stronger than the WRX. That is why the STi gets a different one. I don't know if you would have to do anything to it unless, maybe if you are planning on doing some major mods to the STi. Otherwise I would not worry about it. As far as doing the cryo stuff or whatever else is concerned, I think the big cost would be the labor taking the trans out, apart to do the treatments, and putting it back in. I personally would not worry about it. I would do some mods first, then if you plan on doing more mods, think about the trans.

cpdrj,
Well, this is of course heresay since I do not own a WRX myself, but over on www.i-club.com there have been about 25 people who have blown gear teeth in their tranny. Of course I think about 24 of those people have dragged their car at the strip with drag slicks and 5K clutch dumps.

I am just trying to get a feel for this car before I buy....as it is I am already listed to order one, so I will for sure get one..

I will say this:

I know alot of people that have busted trannies in the 2.5RS and WRX. Both with power mods and without. With that said, I have over 30K miles on mine and have no problems. I did have the clutch shudder problem the clutch was replaced at 17K miles. It seems to be doing fine, but when starting you do have to slip it just a bit or it will shudder. :(

The people that I know that have blown them- some of them could break even the hardest dog-box money could buy and then there are some that have experienced catastrophic failure of no fault of there own.

BTW, Subaru's Pro Rally team is using the STi transmission in the car. There were quoted in Grassroots Motorsports as using 26Lbs of boost in the car without problems WITH RALLY USE. They even said the limit was somewhere between 29-30Lbs  :D That's upwards of 400HP people!! :) One reason to wait- you do get a much stronger tranny, no bull.

Even the media overseas notes the traditional tranny problems with the WRX and praises the STi transmission.
