The other day an X-Subaru salesperson was checking out my new STi. She said that my VIN indicated that my STi was #12. She said that the last part of my VIN (4L505012) indicates this. Can anyone else verify this claim?

maybe the numbering for the US starts at 5000, or 3000. who knows. it just dawned on me. it's probably not good to be posting the serial # because, save for the check digit, everyone knows your vin. i gather that can be a bad thing. (??)

 okay, you busted me. i was talking outa my butt. (talk about confession. ;) ) i dunno man. i just thought it was kind of a private number. but it is in plain sight on the dash. {sign} never mind. but on the same vein, why to people block out their plate number when posting pics of their car. that's another public number you can't do anything with....right?

hehe, I guess you could take the vin number and order sti parts with it?

Also you could take the license plate number and find out stuff of a person, of course I think you would be breaking a few laws in the process. And who do you trust more, the guy on the internet that has your plate number or the guy you just cut off who can see your plate number?

cheers

Really? Sweet....so at least we know there are a thousand out there.

As for production numbers...from the way my dealer was talking today, it sounds like there are more STis than anyone planned on having this early. He is a pretty small dealer, and he received his 3rd allocation today......3rd in 2 months.

Um, mine is over 6 thousand, nearly 7 thousand. And I've had mine since the end of May. I don't think they've made 3000 of them so there's got to be some special significance to the numbering. I'm not convinced it's sequential.

Hey all,

Not sure if I should mention anything, I mena I's sure that everyone associated with this site are trustworthy but JJ or other moderator may want to delete this thread to protect the people that have accidentally listed their VIN number. I say on the news one day about the "low tech" way of stealing cars was to take your VIN number to the dealer saying that they are from out of town and lost their keys and by using the VIN they were able to cut oyu a new set on the spot. Apparently people wern't asking or unable to get verification on if you were the actual owner or not. Not sure if this will still work or not, but better safe than sorry.

Let me help narrow it down for those interested in my STi by this method:

The serial number portion of my STi is in the high 6000's. I lock it in my garage every night which has an automatic opener that I also manually lock. I place a large C-clamp on the rail the door opens on when I'm feeling particularly paranoid. I live in the second largest country in the world (Canada) at 3,851,790 square miles. I own a large dog and I grew up in a family where learning how to field strip and service an AK-47 was a requirement.

Attention would-be thieves: "do your worst". I'm waiting.
