Very low MPG

5306 Views 38 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  the n00b
Hi everybody,

I drive around in intelligent mode most of the time, when i'm feeling froggy I throw it into sport sharp for a little while... I'm getting around 16 MPG. That is worse than my buddies huge Cummins diesel truck, but from what I am reading on these boards.... not too bad!

Would a Cobb engine tune help with gas milage? Any other mods to help with gas milage without sacrificing HP?

Thanks

Hi everybody,

I just recently picked up an STi and I feel like I am getting less than average MPG.

I drive around in intelligent mode most of the time, when i'm feeling froggy I throw it into sport sharp for a little while... I'm getting around 16 MPG. Thar is worse than my buddies huge Cummins diesel truck lol.

Is this normal? Would a Cobb engine tune help with gas milage? Any other mods to help with gas milage without sacrificing HP?

Thanks
Thats sounds on par lol..

Your gas mileage will become better over time if it a brand new car. 17-18 is average in these cars.

Changing the way you drive helps a lot. Skip shift works too 1-2-4-6 skip 3-5.
cool thanks for the suggestion
Is any particular stage 1 better than others in terms of improving gas milage as well as horsepower at the same time?
I added lip, used thicker oil then later started skip shifting and i get around 20mpg.

Some say lip doesnt help with gas mileage. But i think it does. Thicker oil and lip shouldnt net me more gas mileage from what people are saying.

Then skip shifting helped by a little bit more too.
Skip shifting like said above and staying out of boost....well trying to at least lol and I got around 20-22mpg
man, those few extra miles don't even seem worth it... i'de rather boost around everywhere and eat the cost of gas :(

Haha dont worry. My first year was pretty much a lot of boost. (15-17mpg) Now ive calm down a bit and learn to control my right foot its gotten better. I mean enjoy the car!

In light to med traffic. Save a few dollars skip shifts, stay out of boost. In "empty" roads drop it down and floor it. You'll be Surprised how much gas youll save..

Same here. I use thick oil and im stage 1 protuned at about 280 whp and i always row through all the gears and i average about 19-20 city and a little better on the highway. Then again i dont hammer it when driving around normal. Its more about how you drive than anything. Although before i threw the Mobil 1 0w-40 and got my protune i was getting more like 23 mpg and i remember right after i bought it during the break in period when i had it in I mode the whole time i got like 26 mpg :lol:

I've read that a lip helps the GD chassis, but on my 2011 sedan I saw no noticeable change in mpg after adding one.

I noticed that i got better gas mileage in sport sharp. Seriously, i just keep the rpms around 2500-4k when i want to get good mileage. But then I remind myself that I didnt buy the STI for stellar mileage...

What rpm does the "boost" kick in on an '11?

Better oil and throttle control will make a difference. The biggest thing is driving highway vs/ around town. I get about 26mpg and spend all but about 6 miles a day on the interstate cruising at 60mph. If you do more stop and go your mileage will tank hard. This is really noticeable in my wife's supercharged Jag. A week or so on the interstate she is over 22mpg, but if we drive it on the weekend around town it starts dropping quickly. And I believe boost starts coming on around 3500-3750.
Protuned stage 2 driving around town I get the best mileage at about 21-22mpg, but driving on the freeway I get about 18.5. I was surprised that my mileage is always worse on the freeway, but I figure it's due to wind resistance (my avg. cruising speed is not 60mph :devil:)
When my dbag quotient exceeds 2 standard deviations above the mean, my mpgs drop to ... 15... even 14...

I don't know about this 4k rpms bit... I spent most of the past few weaks varying my driving methods and noticed sport# providing the best but it was exceptionally good (rural/city) if I kept it near to 2.5k and shifted at or just before 3k. tried cruising at 3k and shifting 3.5k and it got fairly bad mileage.

though weather definitely impacts it and cruising in 5th/6th changes too.
I usually average 20-21 in city and on long trips, I've gotten around 35.Yes, 35 lol. If you keep the car at 55mph, mpgs skyrocket. I have a thread on it if you wanna see more.

Edit: I forgot to mention I have a '12 stage 2 STi with an ots map.
In town:
Your fucked, get over it and enjoy the 14-18mpg

Highway:
65mph = 26mpg
70mph = 24mpg
80mph = 18mpg
90mph = 16mpg
100mph = 13mpg (dont ask how I know this, not a normal day)

decisions decisions....

I'm getting consistent 24mpg, this is from a daily 15 miles of commute up a hill. The only tip I can offer is driving style:

1. Coast in gear
2. Apply throttle at roughly 25% max in Intelligent mode
3. First 2 gear upshift 3k rpm, the rest 2k rpm upshift

Yes it sucks to accelerate so slow but I can easily get 26+ on freeway. If this is too slow for you, drive to speed limit in S# in moderate acceleration then switch to Intelligent later to maintain speed. It worked for me.
I don't know why anyone would ever drive in I mode. Its like driving a golf cart when you put your foot down. My hand automatically turns to S# when I start the car. I'm protuned 93 and get about 17 city but as high as 26-28 mpg on highway IF I keep the revs down to 2k-2.5k. Thats slow on highway...60-65mph. Otherwise if I do 80 Im getting less than 20mpg. On E85 I get like 13 mpg city and only up tp 20 highway.

keep the revs low and you will get better mpg
Never thought of skipping gears! Good suggestion man
