I am looking into the possibility of buying a WRX STI and have heard from a somewhat reliable sorce that since the WRX STI puts out a decient amount of hp already that in order to do any major upgrades that I would have to rebuild or replace the trans. My sorce says the trans will not take the ammount of hp it will be given and will tear itself up. I don't totally agree with him, but wanted someone elses advise as to any problems i may encounter if and when i buy my STI and start upgrading it. Not sure exactly what i would upgrade, but prob new exaust system, intake sys, cold air intake, ground effects kit w/ wing, upgraded turbo possibly and at bottom of list would be NOS... the list goes on of coarse........ i basicly want to know if the trans will take more than 380hp with the stresses or a daily driver and rare 1/4 dashes. Bare with me, I am just getting into impreza's and I admit i prob dont totally know what i am talking about, but would like to know anyones struggles upgrading them cars and any future problems i might run into if I were to buy one..... Any help would be, well helpful.

Thanks,
Ian

Well, they have been running the STi six speed in RALLY situations in the SCCA ProRally. They have been pumping 26PSi of boost into the engine- and guess what- the tranny is holding up!

They said that that equals ~380HP, and that it could probably take up to 29PSi of boost. This was all in an article from the December of January Grassroots Motorsports..

Unlike the WRX 5-speed, the STi 6-speed is pretty beefy.

The upgrades that I plan on doing in the long run include: programmable engine management, exhaust, ball-bearing turbo..
