Holy Expensive Gas, Batman...

According to the April-03 Sport Compact Car (SCC) pg. 93...

"Mistubish announced pricing for the U.S. Evo 8 at our press time. The MSRP $28,987- $4,992 more than a WRX sedan. Production volume is not limited. In other words, Mitsubishi will build as many as it can sell".

Hopefully, SOA will follow suit and make as many STis to satisfy demand. I think SOA will want to make as much $ as possible, and will not limit producton even though they announced only 4-5K units at the unveiling in Jan. However, that number can change, as it did when the WRX was made available. Let's hope this is true so the price is kept in check.

well, here's a few of thoughts:
1) i seriously doubt they're making anywhere near the profit on the STi as they do on other models, say, the wrx or legacy.
2) i think you're overestimating the demand for such a car. look at it this way: if they could sell even 30% more than they're producing, that would make a very competitive market. in three years if they're still making the same STi, there would still be a waiting list and people would still be charging ~$5K over msrp. do you really think that would happen?
i mean, here you have *the* forums for prospective usdm STi buyers and we have a whole 666 users? even if every person registered on this board were to buy an STi that still only covers the first month - two months of production.
3) people keep throwing the term "limited production" around without stopping to think about it. i personally don't feel like 5K-6K cars per year is limited. the 1995 m3 ltw was limited (200 produced). the 88-91 m3 convertible was limited (~875 produced), cars like aston martins, morgans, caterhams, those are limited. look at the s2000, it's got the same production volume as is proposed for the STi. do you consider that a "limited production car"?
soa knows what they're doing. they're going to make enough for everyone who wants one, but by setting this soft "limit" they're creating a different attitude towards the car and increasing resale value.

Well, as it has been said earlier, the WRX came in 'limited' numbers at first, and now you can take your pick of 30 on some dealer lots. Also, everywhere else in the world, the STi is just like a Z28 or SS Camaro. If you wanted one, yeah, there aren't as many, but you can get one.

There will be an initial rush for the car and price gouging, but after that, you will probably be able to find them on the lots here and there, and if not, just order one.

And I dunno where the 5-6K number you heard came from, but SOA has said 3K several times, which is pretty close to the estimate of 300 per month we've also been hearing.

it seemed like i heard ~3K for the first (half) year and ~5K - 6K after that. i could definitely be wrong though.
even if it is in the 3K - 3.5K / year range, that's still quite a few. i'm with you, i just don't think they'll be hard to get.
