turbo blanket users

Thinking Of going stage 2 and want to work on reducing heat soak. Tuner suggested using a turbo blanket and just want to hear from any one who has used them for a while. Particularly interested in how our stock turbo handles being wrapped and dealing with the heat over time. Anyone had a turbo failure using a blanket?

Also has anyone observed a rise in coolant temps generally using a blanket since our cars have a system which cools the turbo internally. The wrapped turbo requires more cooling from within so that causes the cars coolant temps to rise. Well that's my concern anyway. From what I've t read the blanket looks like a good idea but just want some more info from users before I do it. Car: 2012 hatch stock turbo aemintake currently stge1 but will soon get COBB catted dp and new fuel pump and the blanket (tuner suggested this) Not a track car. Just a DD. Thx

I have a cobb heatshield, PTP lava blanket on stock turbo with a cobb catted DP that I had coated by swaintech (white lightning). I am retaining a lot of heat now vs stock and heatsoak is basically non existant unless I am sitting for more than a few min in traffic. Before I shut off the car (no turbo timer) I let it run for ~10sec. I never shut it off after hard driving without a few extra sec to cool. I have not noticed an increase in coolant temps even with 90+ deg ambient temps using my above steps. I wouldn't run without a blanket unless I had a FMIC.
I had a PTP blanket on an aftermarket stock location turbo. It worked very well and did not affect coolant temps that i could tell on the stock gauge. This will do a better job than a heat shield.
I've been running turbo blankets since the mid 90's. No worries. No problems. Greatly reduced under good temps.

Letting your engine and turbo cool down a bit after spirited driving is crucial, no matter if you have a blanket or not.

Turbo blankets are pretty much awesome.

I use the Perrin turbo blanket. Like most have said heat soak isn't an issue unless you're sitting in slow moving traffic for an extended period of time.

Temps are relatively the same.
Thanks - I do understand that heat soak is what we are addressing by using the blanket -- but its the issues on the inside of the blanket I'm interested in. IE -- is keeping all that heat inside the turbo gonna cause it to fail. From what I have been reading the answer is "definitely probably not";)
Just get the PTP blanket and forget about it.

Just make sure you let the engine idle and cool before shutting the car off. You could always get a turbo timer but it's not really necessary. I just got my PTP blanket and I'm gonna get it installed next week.

To simplify the answer no the blanket will not cause your turbo to fail in and of itself. The turbo when used hard will glow "red" its already subjected and designed to work during extreme heat cycles. the blanket keeps the heat in the turbo and off the IC. The added heat retention in the turbo will allow the gases to flow faster out. This is something you want.
thanks appreciate all the info. Really looking forward to this round of mods! -- will post my impressions and numbers once done.

look into a dp blanket also. really like mine.
DP blanket? Interesting.....
aha -- found it. This looks like another good idea. Anyone else try this?

No but it looks pretty ugly. What's wrong with wrapping the down section of the DP? It's worked well for me so far. I am positive that the blanket would perform better with heat control but its also really spendy for its function!
spoke with the guys at EFI who will be doing my work. They are aware of the dp blanket but have concerns with it moving over time... I do respect their opinions as they do excellent work and a lot of it. Still they dont like wrapping due to moisture getting under the wrap inevitably and breaking it down and the underlying metalwork. They are big fans of the PTP lava blanket tho.
I hate heat soak. Now running my 2nd turbo blanket. The PTP didnt hold up well IMO. I switched to a DEI Titanium. Blanket on the turbo, DP is heat coated and wrapped. No complaints on the setup.

wow that looks like some nice work. What happened with the PTP -- was it the "lava" version?

Mine was cooked after 2 years. The black area was very brittle and it was falling apart all along the edges. Pics when I took it off. It was not the lava version.

Do you have to remove the turbo to install these?
