it has a dial inside to tilt depending on how car rides with load in it. Benzes have had this feature over 10 years (I am curious to why we would need that in the STi) its not like anyone will have a trailer attached and hauling 1000 pound to need to adjust lights.

DCCD Controls

by US law, if you have HID lights, you must have a mechanism by which to level them as they are perceived as being too bright if mis-aimed due to a load in the vehicle.

this can be done with a switch as is on the left side of the dash for the STi. more often it is done with ride height sensors on the car, usually attached to the sway bar to sense the vehicle's attitude front to rear.

my wife's Cooper S w/Xenon's has a little link on the rear suspension for this purpose, very similar (no surprise since it's a BMW) to the ones on an E46 BMW with Xenons.

the leveling is pretty obvious actually, as you can see it re-level when you pull away from a stop at an intersection. that's not to say the car rolls a lot F/R but that the system is pretty sensitive.

levelling is also a requirement in Europe on _all_ cars I believe, as I've driven several cars with out HID's which have it.

Wow I didn't expect to get that info, but that's good to know! I thought it was just an extravagant feature when I saw it on my coworker's 330i...anyway I was wondering if anyone at either the Detroit Auto Show or the Petersen Preview recorded it on camera digitally.

My question about all of this though is why is our system manual? I've never seen a manual leveling system. The reason leveling systems are usually in place is because they take place behind the scenes and no matter how the driver would like the lights to be, they are always correct.

Does this mean some numbnuts in an STi can just crank up the lights like he's running a night rally or something?? Seems.......against the point!

Nice pics....

So does this mean that the at the highest level, that is the normal headlight height and then it only allows you to lower the beams?

You know...with a re-aim job......that feature will be really cool!

High beams...we don't need no stinking high beams!

having problems with my left headlight with my 97 wrx, its aiming up to high and i want to tilt it back down towards the road, how do i do this?
I have never done it, but if I am not mistaken, there are brackets with screws that hold the headlights in. The tighter it is, the higher it aims I think.

My previous 06 cta9 mr I had adjustable HID's and here in Maryland as a police officer I pull over kids that have them in there STi's or big lifted trucks that a bright HID bulb is Illegal now! All I can say I own them but I have an advantage, kinda sucks but they ask why do they sell them on shelves and I say I ask that same question to myself all the time lol.
