Re: Tofu delivery Special (Trying to figure out the Car PC)

Subscribed for car pc progress. Been thinking of doing this at some point (with a Tactrix), just looks daunting...

Just the planning process has been daunting because of the learning curve. Planning a desktop build is relatively easy compared to this process so far, as the PC has to perform many tasks that are usually handled by other electronic devices, which requires quite a bit of cross compatibility. By the time it is all done and installed I guarantee it will be different from the list I have now. The one thing that turned me away from the Tactrix was the price ~$150 and the fact that I have a COBB AP. The AP already has a data logging function, so the only catch here is making sure that the AP sends real-time data to the PC. From what I've seen online, the AP will send data to a PC, but there are several questions I'm still trying to find the answers to.
  • Does the AP send data real time or does it compile it after a run?
  • What is the time in between samples for the AP?
  • Can you modify the sampling time for the AP?
  • Will the AccessTUNER program display real time gauges, or is it only a chart based program specifically for tuning only.
  • Will the AP data interface with any other program besides AccessTUNER?
This is more of a quick list to remind myself of what I'm looking for as I pour through the COBB forums and continue to beat a dead horse with the Google toolbar. Anyone who has experience with freeware navigation programs, please give me some feedback on what you think. If I can't find a proper navigation freeware program I'll be shelling out the $60 for the Garmin PC nav software to use with Ride Runner. And if my trial process of ride runner doesnt work right, or is too much a PITA, I'll be going back to the $125 Centrafuse.

A side thought: I know a shop 4 hours away from my house (and near the in-laws) that has installed a few Car PCs, but I'm not sure if they will be doing the install at this point. It seems like the programming piece is the only thing I dont have any prior experience with. Most car PC builders do not compile their front end in the vehicle, but rather they do the complete install and tweaking with the system setup outside of the car. This would make the professional installation more feasible as I the car is my DD, and the most that I will be able to have it in the shop for install would be a weekend.

I've thankfully already got the Tactrix as my primary tuning / logging tool. I hear what you're saying re: the multi function - I've done 10's of desktop builds, really straight forward. Here you've got a touch screen thrown into the mix, issues with space, issues with heat and NVM, etc. did some reading, eventually thought I'd park it for when I had the energy! In any case, it's a moot point, my build is bleeding me dry right about now

I was thinking of using EvoScan - but only works with Tactrix.

Re: Tofu delivery Special (More parts delivered to the house)

Blue Batmobile smoked overlays showed up, and so did my shifter from KillerB. Went 6/10 for front and rear. May need to get some brighter bulbs. Shifter from killer B is the brushed black one.

Re: Tofu delivery Special (Trying to figure out the Car PC)

are you back from overseas yet?
Nope. I was back for 15 days on R&R, and I'm back downrange again. I've been trying to get in contact with the shop that I talked to about the CAR PC, and they've not answered any emails. TBE, Headers (used stockers), and CAI are still sitting in the garage and I've been anned from buying more parts until they disappear. Wife said she was thinkig of putting on the overlays this weekend, and I hope she doesnt mess it up.

The good news is that have less than a month before I get home. Then the fun begins. I'll have a while of halfdays and then a month of vacation.

What's up though?

I'm more and more surprised about her and mods. She took it down to freaky friday (time on 1st post) and since asked what she could get done to the car because she didnt like having that slow a time. Granted, her 60' was garbage, but if it gets me new parts...then I'm ok with it.

In other news (journal related), the Car PC price is now below $1k. Some crucial assumptions are there.
  1. I can figure out how to use the AP to transmit data to the car-pc
  2. I can figure out how to get the Garmin to transmit to the car-pc
  3. The wife doesnt eat my soul when I buy the parts

You might be better off selling the AP and going open source. I am positive it will interface with your car PC better.

Thanks. In the end it will be a big leap and will depend on what my tuner feels comfortable with. The price looks much better, $150 for a tactrix cable and sell the AP for $450 or so. That would change the Car PC cost total, and reduce it to under $700. Right now the entire decision is being weighted in pros and cons. Now that there is a gauge product for the GR coming out that can look near OEM, the benefits of the CAR PC are dwindling. If I ind a place closer to home that has done this kind of install before, the pros would have it. ARGH!

So, the old lady opened up the package with the overlays to install them this weekend and pieces were missing :( Emailed BB about it.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about that.

Happy 4th by the way.
:thx:

for anyone who cares, :censored::smash::fight::devil::mad: is the general mood right now. Feeling quite agitated, not about the overlays, more or less the date, my location and people's lame FB, twitter, forums, etc whining online posts today. "Wah, I have homework on 4th of July"... :censored::censored::censored:

Re: Tofu delivery Special (Trying to figure out the Car PC)

Headers got to the house yesterday, waiting on a few more details from the wife before submitting feedback. Just making sure I'm as accurate as possible since the wife is receiving all these parts while I'm "playing" in the sand. I'm happy with the time they took to get there either way. Emailed BB about the overlays and the wife should be giving him a call since phones here are garbage. Gotta love having a six digit phone number no one recognizes that cuts out quite frequently. Should be able to start working on the car in about 2-3 weeks. I might use the time to learn a bit of linux based code.
