08 STi after being stage 1 e-tuned. Tuner says FBKC is probably noise, not real knock.

This is part of a log taken while I was cruising on the highway. I am seeing this sort of FBKC in 5th and 6th gear almost every time I hit an uphill and give it some gas/go into boost.

What do you guys think? Noise or knock?

NSFW, I know you've already commented.. but your opinion/discussion is still very welcome! :D

Only a Harman Motive CBE. I have gone over the car multiple times looking for anything that may be rattling or hitting the driveline. There is nothing.

How many miles are on it/ does it knock all the time? Some of those 08 were crated and marked engine replacement from the factory..did u do a protune?

Didn't you have these same problems awhile back and people were telling you to use thicker oil to mask the knock altogether even though you were burning alot of oil?

I remember stating that you should get another tune and if the problem persists, it is most likely a mechanical problem related to engine internals.

You were also burning quite a bit of oil, was this resolved? I remember some people telling you to go thicker oil to "solve" this.

Think about it this way. If you have a differential seal leak and getting differential noise would you just up the weight from a 75w90 to a 140 weight? Yeah that would either stop the leak or leak alot slower while muffling the noise but you did not solve the problem in anyway.

I unsubscribed because of all the drama queens.

I suggest that you just trust your tuner at this point and get that oil consumption problem actually fixed if it is still happening.

Oil consumption has been fixed. Had Mobil 1 in there from the dealer and it came out like water after 4,500 km. I am running Amsoil 0w30 now and after 5,000 km I have consumed less than 1 quart. I have topped it up twice with around a 1/4 quart each time.

I now have 80,000 kms on the engine so from what I read this oil consumption is well within spec now.

I am changing the oil in the next week and I will be sending it away for an oil analysis.

I'm still suspicious of a mechanical problem but compression/leakdown are well within spec as well.

Got a revised map from my tuner this morning and it seems to have removed all city driving knocking. Haven't had a chance to get onto the highway yet though.

Just letting you know that of the 08+ STis I've worked on with a clean bill of health don't burn anything close to that at 3500 miles and temps here get to above 100 F. But yeah, whatever floats your boat. Hope the oil analysis comes back good. If it does then you are golden.
Just let your tuner handle it. If anything, you are still under warranty if all you did is stage 1 and purchased the 100k extended (just make sure you flash back to stock) If not, then I hope everything goes a ok for you.

I wouldn't say that consuming close to a quart of oil floats my boat.. it's still not right.

That being said, how many miles are on the 08 STi's that you've worked on? My car ran 68,000 km with the stock tune :(

In the back of my mind I am SURE I have a cracked piston.. but I can't prove it. I have no smoking from oil filler/exhaust, literally zero oil in intercooler, piping and intake and the car pulls hard.

I do have an extended warranty until 110,000km

08+ STis I've worked on range from 5- 60k miles interestingly enough the one with 60k is running catless TBE + CAI on a stock tune and has had it for about 35k miles (pretty crazy but he keeps telling me he wants to know how long it will last, been driving it hard since day 1 too). I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS... he is some kind of freak outlier.
The oil analysis will tell you if you are ok or not.
Also FYI SOA specs that their vehicles are allowed to burn 1 qt per 1k miles before they do anything about it as long as the car is running in a safe and proper manner. I speculate this is where alot of the Subarus drinking oil is normal statements originated from. It does not say that there is nothing wrong, only that 1 qt loss in 1k miles is acceptable until action should be taken. What about the people who don't monitor oil consumption and blow the motor? They get blamed for not checking in this case.

Yeah and 1 quart in 1k miles is consuming A LOT of oil. In my case, I'm not even close to that. So when I mentioned oil consumption the dealer said it's normal for these cars to burn/consume oil.

One thing for sure, it's not consuming oil because of blow by. My intercooler is very clean.

<kens>: Hi Pete & Rick -- Two oil related questions: 1) What's Subaru's stance on synthetic oil on the Phase I engine? Is it better than conventional oil? 2) What is considered normal oil consumption? I typically loose about 1 quart every 3000 miles or so. No signs of leaks or blue exhaust smoke. Is this something to worry about?

<rick_subaru>: On the synthetic oil... if you start with synthetic, stick with it. For the oil consumption, 1 quart per 1000 miles is actually acceptable.

<jmackuliak 4>: Yes. I was told that all seals were not approved for synthetic oil and I may encounter leaks at my own risk.
<pete_subaru>: If you start out with a synthetic, keep using a synthetic... if you start out with a regular oil, and switch, yes you could encounter leaks.

<michael_desu>: Is that 15W-50W engine oil better for high speed driving? Since I think the engine is going to be very hot...
<rick_subaru>: 15W-50W is usually better for hotter conditions. We don't recommend using it because it has an adverse affect on fuel mileage and emissions. It's not a bad oil to use for your circumstance.

<got_wrx>: I am using Mobil1 10-30W synthetic. I heard this brand/grade could ruin the WRX's engine. Is that true?
<rick_subaru>: No, it should not have any adverse affect on the engine, provided you're putting more than one quart in! LOL

Losing a quart of oil every 3k-3.5k miles isn't great and isn't 100% normal, but it is pretty common on these engines. My 2005 LGT used a quart every 3k-5k miles from the 17k miles that I bought it with to the over 90k miles I sold it with. I tried many different brands and weights of synthetic oil, and it consumed them all. (It consumed M1 5W30 quicker than anything - keep that crap out of these engines! M1 10W40 and 0W40 were fine however.) My experience was not at all unusual among the legacygt.com crowd.

Was something wrong with my LGT? Almost certainly, since not all of these engines consume that much. But the consumption was consistent for all those miles, and it made good power after going stage 2 with a protune - a bit more than average even.

My 2010 STI barely consumes a drop, but then again it's a bit down on power compared to most.

While the LGT was stock and still under warranty I asked a dealer to look into the oil consumption. But as you've discovered SOA's policy is that any consumption under a quart every 1k miles is okay, so they couldn't do anything.
