Had the pleasure of meeting up with a new BMW M3 on the freeway today. I was traveling about 110kmh and he past me at about 120kmh. I was looking at him and he was looking at me. Tension brewed but neither of us wanted to instigate. Changed lanes and followed him at about 120kmh.(75mph).He was about 6 car lenghths in front of me when he floored it.Took me bout 3 secs to wake up before I floored it as well. By this time he was about ten car lenghths in front. I couldn't catch up but he couldn't pull away. We went to 220kmh before seeing a car way up ahead and the brakes came.I reckon if next to each other and floored the same time there would not be more than one car lenghth between the two.
I think if we carried on I wouldn't have kept up.That car is fast.

Yes, I know to keep it for the track. I lost self control O.K.

Yeah, the car with the most cylinders & HP usually wins when it comes to racing at higher speeds. I bet you would have kicked his butt off the line. I raced a WRX on the 1/4 mile with my S60 T-5 and he pulled me by a half car length before I started to reel him in after 70 (I have 5 cylinders and a little more HP @ 245. But by the time I was able to pull ahead the 1/4 mile was already up.

ahahhaha but hey in responce to mooneyflyer....that is not the case of more cylinders will win....becasue i owned 2 rx7s.....and trust me you wanna talk about high speeds that car can rock on the freeway!!! as well as off the line!! and thats only a 1.3 litre with no cylinders  lol just 2 triangles!!! ahahha but honestly its how you drive the car and how u know when to shift to gain MAX HP and torque!!! its not always about taken it past the (FUN) line but when you know your car can be capable of maxen out its FUN limit !!! lol

just thought id share my .02 cents

BTW my focus stock zx3 spanked a wrx wagon with MODS!!! :D

Nice run BTW, I am pretty sure both cars are around the same in performance, but it all depends on the driver. I will find out which one is faster at high speed(better pick up) in STOCK form when i receive mine.

The M3 is a lot better at top speeds and higher speeds. The gearing on the STi is pretty low. The 6th gear ratio is actually lower than the 5th gear ratio on the WRX. Not too mention you are talking about nearly double the engine size from the STi to the M3's 3.2L 6 cylinder.

Gearing is lower on the STi, but the redline is higher, so top speed on the JDM is 155mph.

WRX 7,000 RPM, 5th gear .738 final drive 3.9, 140 mph (est.).
STi 8,000 RPM, 6th gear .842 final drive 3.9, 148/155 mph.

check out:
http://www.car-videos.com/tools/speedrpm.asp

The ratios for the WRX are in the pull down.

The STi ratios are here you will have to plug them in:

PS: Top speed is limited primarily by horsepower and air resistance. I think the calculator above neglects wind resistance, so top end numbers are way too big. They are probably accurate if in a vacuum. Oh, and it does not take the governor into account, which sets the artificial, 155mph top speed, so I am told.

When I was in college...

ahahhahahah, well he had 2 gauges on his pod on the a-pillar and i know he had an exhasut + an intake that f***en car was LOUD  , sh*t i already beat an SVT focus lastnight with 3 peeps in my car and a full tank  sh*t i also rocked a 5 speed firbird too lol i have the crack whore focus!!!

BUt anyways i am really surprised to hear the gearing on the STI, why did they do that???? is it becasue they got it ready for rally racing and the gearing is lowered becasue of the tracks????? but i am surprised who the hell is gonna rally racing???? well then again ill try it lol but most of my days will be on the street!!

They did that to keep the car in the boost more usable. Yes the STi is more geared for the track/rally. Heck, a lot of people take a stock STi and add a few safety mods to it and rally it.

I read that the STi is geared for acceleration... 4th in the STi is like 3rd in the WRX or something like that. Anyone seen that short vid of an STi speedometer while it accelerates for 10seconds or somthing. It looks like it hits 40 in about 1-2 seconds and 60 not long after. I wish I had a link but I only have it saved on my HD.

Rallys are done quite a bit on tarmac...... Subarus have always been geared more towards off the line acceleration and not top speed.

ok thats cool, i kinda figured that too!! i mean i live in the winter state so this car would be perfect for me, instead of getting mad when it snows maybe ill be poutting when it doesnt lol!! :D

Comparing the 4th gear in an STI to the 3rd gear in a wrx, well its a true comaprsiion becasue iof you think about it the wrx is a 5 speed and the STI is a 6 speed, so there for the gearing on the STI is made for accleration like said, Of course second gear in a 6 speed in a general quote is like a 1 gear in any 5 speed...but the advantage for the 6 speed i think is the off the line accleration and mid range speed....but overall on freeway driving im guessen it will rev alot lower since the 6th gear is much like an overdrive in an automatic transmission....

thats just my .02 cents...

It has been said that 6th gear on the STi is in fact shorter than 5th in the WRX, which means at the same cruising speed the STi will rev higher.

But it's not unheard-of for Subaru to change gear ratios for a particular market. They did it for the Aussies to suit their roads/driving styles, etc.
