STi versus Acura TL Type S..not what you think

Ok maybe it is what you think...

I was sitting at a light today next to an E92 M3 on my left and an Acura TL Type S on my right. The kid in the bimmer was nodding at me and jerking his head toward the light so I thought what the hell and jumped it when the light turned green.

I jumped out in front of the bimmer and held him at about a car lenght but what surprised the hell out of me was the TL walked us both. I let up at about 75 and the bimmer and TL kept on it down the road, the Acura inching out more and more the whole way.

The Acura was dead silent, at least I could not hear it over the growl of the suby and the damn near F1 wail of the BMW (god that car sounds awesome).

I am just curious if anyone on here is in the know about the TL. I always assumed they had very little mod potential which has kept me away, however I have always liked the look of them and they sport a nice interior with Honda reliability. If I thought I could own one that would walk my suby I would be all over it.

I am guessing the guy was sporting a turbo kit at the least and maybe a TT. Any common upgrades done to these cars to get them anywhere near walking a well tuned stage 2 car??

(and yes I know street racing is irresponsible...I get goaded occasionally

ive never seen a modded TL before, but that doesnt mean there isnt a group for it... i would imagine aftermarket support is pretty thin, unless its something that crosses over from the RSX or something...

I know the Type-S comes stock with 300hp...

haha.. i had one back in the day. it was my first modded car. you're probably referring to the 3rd gen TL type S since the 4th gen (current gen) are big boats. I had a 2nd gen which was also known as the Honda Inspire in JDM land. but yes. people modded them.

idk what similarities between 2nd and 3rd gen were but a catback intake and headers would net you a decent amount of power. the Type S started w/ 265 crank hp IIRC (maybe 245hp i dont remember) but the best thing (or worst) was to put in a comptech supercharger (same brand that sold the supercharger for the honda/acura NSX).

I looked it up, the model year I saw come with 286hp and people are claiming around 20-30 whp from cat delete + UD pulley + intake. Even then, maybe 325bhp.... the dude walked me, I was impressed. I really wanted to ask the guy what he had done, but I was not going to follow them any faster than 75 down a 55mph street.

I would love a wicked fast Acura, like and NSX-R, but a crazy fast TL could be cool too....

AH yes i forgot about the pulley and throttle body spacers. i dont miss that car at all though... POS once I started modding it

He was probably modded, I am guessing his gearing helped get you on the low end. Maybe he was supercharged.... Most centrifugal chargers are pretty quiet.

I should turn this thread into a "sleepers you didnt see coming" or "cars you expected to beat that walked you"

I wish more car owners wanted to talk shop. People have such big ego's, you play with someone a little on the street and they are too caught up in their car being better. I usually just want to know what they have done to it. I tried to get someone to roll their window down at a light after ripping down a back street with them and they gave me the finger and took off through the red (saved me from telling him he had a cool car i suppose

too true! I always give respect to well done cars, even if mine is faster. I hate sore losers, or egotistical people who can't be bothered. Smart, mature people share the knowledge

Or the opposite, theirs is faster and you are just trying to ask them about their car and give them a compliment and they are to superior to talk to someone who drives a slower car.

Its like, "fine, fuck you, I wont compliment your car and tell you how cool I think it is, be a dick!"

I got OWNED by an eclipse a while back, really wanted to talk to the guy but he was just shaking his head at me and giving me a smirk. I was like :wave::wave: and he was like :eek2:

LOL for you to get owned by an eclipse, he would have had to put a LOT of money into it...unless it was the older eclipse turbo/eagle talon style, but even then...still...lol the joke is on him.

This threads remind of why you never buy a car based solely on 0-60 times. Also reminds of a thread where a Prius driver thought a Z06 he "blew away" was racing him.

I got spanked by a heavily modded eagle talon. This guy's EWG made my ears ring for a couple of minutes. Gave him a thumbs up though nice car.

Also had an S2000 put 3 car lengths on me. I was shifting at 4k tho since I was breaking the car in at the time, so wasn't that surprised. One of the most pointless races I ever had.

Had a bit of fun with a WRX on the highway last week. Did like 3 pulls, put a bus length on him in one of them and 3 car lengths in another and the last one I started later and we both ended it at 130mph cause it was too bait and he signaled me saying there were cops ahead, we were neck and neck at that point though.

This should really go in the street racing thread...I went way off topic there

Back in 2004 I had wrb 2002 wrx that I purchased new.
Had it on stage 2 and got spanked on the highway .
By integra type R that had allot work done to it .
I was shocked ! Not many cars could beat a wrx back then .

I used to own 6spd 2007 TL-S. it's slower than my 15WRX without mods. stock touring passanger tires were devistating with not enough grip. Manual shifter was very stiff and I missed gears numerous times. Suspension was very soft but handled pretty well; riding quality was really great. If you were surprised by unexpected performance by TL-S, the car probably has hondata ecu flashpro with downpipe and good performance tires. With those mods and good driving skills, yeah.....it can out perform stock sti

Friend of mine has a TL. Turbo and manual-swapped. Runs a 400-ish HP street tune, but laid down around 500HP on the dyno.

4k, low boost no tune? You can barely pass let alone race. I did breakin so long I was getting used to it! Forgot the power and is just below 4k - 7k Taught me how to drive efficiently though I see no prose in it.
