Hi. I've had an Sti on order for a couple of months now through my dealer in Canada. Today, I received a faxed copy from him of a memo from Ted Lalka, VP Marketing, Subaru Canada, dated January 10, 2003.

In it, he states Canada's unveiling will be at the Toronto Auto Show on Feb 14, 2003. He goes on to say Canada's version will be the same as the US with the following exceptions:
- will NOT have HID :( :( :(
- will have rear trunk pass through
- will have audio system
- will have heated driver's seat

As much as I like to be toasty in the winter, I would gladly get rid of all these "extras" in exchange for HID.
Has anyone from Canada heard similar?
Is it too late to do anything about this?

Tks.

For now, what is really officially coming in Canada that I know as standard on the car:

Improved and upgraded front/rear bumpers
Auto daytime running lights

Since the law require auto daytime running lights and the Canada law for bumpers are higher than in the US and the bumpers do not comply for here right now so for sure they will be upgraded. Those are the two only thing that have been confirmed by Subaru of Canada that were modified but I may had wrong info since what you received really make sense...... If you look, HID are not legal here if they are not factory installed. Right now, there is some BMW, Mercedes and Audi having those lights but since it would be factory installed, why are they not putting the HID on the car...... I'm also wondering! If you have some more news, keep my informed in private mail also to make sure I receive the info. I will do the same.

This is sad, but I have seen the booklet that the dealer got.

No info on weight, didn't really looked into gear-ratio. I will check that again later.

But...

1. NO HID!!!

2. Trunk pass through

3. heated seats

4. 6 CD standard.

And since the car that I drive now got HID, it is a must for me.

I don't think it will be legal if I add them on later, so either that I don't buy the car this year, and wait to see if they will have that?

Or keep my current ride and use the STi for weekends only...

To buy or not to buy, it drives me crazy already. For those why say HID makes no differences... you should try to drive on sections of 401 where they got no road lights... HID is a God sent...

He could but it's not legit here to add those lights if they were not installed when the car was purchased and cops have a list of cars who have those lights installed in factory :( ... It's a chance to take if you want to do it!

Would you still be legal if you imported the US model? You'd have everything including factory-installed HIDs except heated seats and trunk pass-through...and you'd have to upgrade the bumper... :)

Or move to the US

We also don't have weight or pricing info either. I have been checking the official website almost daily for additional info, but nothing new yet for the last couple of weeks or so... :(

SnowbordrWRX: When importing a car, you need to go through inspection so I guess it would fail inspection.

ALL: Also, there is one REALLY good thing here in Canada... Let's say:
Ford Mustang Cobra 2003: USD$: 35000$ ... If you do the translation, it SHOULD be 55300$ CAN$... You know what? The car sells for 46000$ CAN$ !!! So it's not really the exchange it's supposed to...

Subaru Impreza WRX: USD$: 24-25000$ ... If you do the translation that SHOULD give about 39500$, it's currently 34995$ (give's about 5000$ CAN$ less)...

So, either if we are unlucky with some stuff, we are a bit more lucky with pricing, that's why lot's of people bring cars from Canada to the US because they can make a few thousands with it... The only bad thing here is that you pay 15.56% of taxes on the amount of the car...

Okay, it just happens that I know some import inspectors, too... seriously.

Cuz I was considering getting the EVO VII from evolutionimports.net

Now like it or not, for me that's the BEST looking Evo IMHO, and of course it's got all the goodies, like ACD/AYC, bababa.

But it cost 40K US to boot, but the inspector told me that. Depends on the state, it might have to take the emission test, it will need bumper that's up to the CDN spec, 8km/h. It will also need to have daytime running light. Which you can bypass all that if you register the car in US first and import it as an used car. 2 people have done that with their Evo VII and currently there are at least 2 EVO VII running street legal in Canada, now. That's the EVO VII, not the crappy US-sepc $hitty EVO VIII.

So, no import one will likely give you more trouble.

Honestly, I don't think I am getting one. But that's because I live like 4 hours away from the MoSport & Shannoville, Busy in school. When they do have HID (if ever), and I have seen how the car hold up. I will of course look into it. I got HID on my car now, won't get a car without one, and my car will be street legal. Cuz the speed I will be driving is not. And have a non-street legal car will likely to give me more problem.

The wiring harness for the daytime running lights can't get a spark to ignite the electrodes in the HID lights. They do fire if the lights switch is in the on position whe you start the car. Once the lights are on one can switch to daytime running mode, but transport canada says, that extra step does not satisfy the law. My problem is that the 2003 sti will be heavily under valued compared to 2004 models(that will presumably have HID's)

Hey Sylvain.
I think I'll be at the Toronto show on the 15th and most of my time will be spent ogling  the STi especially since I have a silver one on order here in Ottawa. I wanted to know what it will look like with the blue seats and carpet though otherwise I will go with tradition and get WRB. Oh well I bet they will have the WRB on display. My dealer also called to confirm my colour choices and said the HID were an option... I think he could be mistaken after I read wave's explanation above.

OhGeeSti: Don't forget to have your digital camera in hand :) Try to have some info on the Canadian pricing... There a major difference between two dealers here in Montreal and others. Here, they are saying 42k-45k, somebody in Toronto have placed the order at 47500$ I think... I'm really wondering what will be the pricing here. Considering the Mustang Cobra is 35k US and 45k Canadian, *maybe* we could be surprised with a price near 42-45 or as some says 47!!!

Hi,

Is there anyone out there that knows when the STi will be available in Canada? I heard something about the end of summer.

It's too bad about the HID but I'm quite a lot of dealers will offer it as an option as it was the case with the WRX.

STi Availability

Got a call from my dealer last week informing me that my car had "officially" been ordered. :) The only choices/options were colour and wheels. All other options (HID?) will be dealer installed.
Apparently Canada is getting 100 cars in May but he's not sure exactly how/where they will be distributed. He's still holding out for May and I'm thinking positive thoughts...

Hopefully out of the 100 coming to Canada....Montreal will get a couple of cars. :) I'm going to get info at my local Subaru dealer.

I can't wait to see what the price will be, though! Hoping it's not going to be over $45k...But even at that price, you're getting a lot of car for the money!

I have been told by my dealer that it probably would be July before I see my car - probably an estimate based on the fact that I am #2 on the waiting list. But then I have not heard anything from my dealer about any "official" ordering - all they have done has taken my preference of wheel and body color. Am I the only one who feels like he is being "left in the dark" by his dealer? Maybe it is not by their choice - I seem to know more about the STi than they do, but then I haven't talked to the dealer rep since the unveiling in Detroit. I am hoping to hear more from the dealer rep when I see him after the Toronto Auto Show.
