Cost speculations have been flying around in other topics, in both US and Canadian funds. Is it reasonable to suspect a price for the STi to be 10 to 20 thousand dollars more than the WRX? Are we willing to pay this much of a higher price for the STi? I am already paying about $850 per month Canadian for my WRX, I don't think I can afford several hundred for a month for the STi. No doubt the car is worth it, but like others have been saying, Subaru might loose many deposits when people like me choose to keep their WRX's in the face of an over-priced STi. Others may opt for the EVO VIII if it comes in at a cheaper price (I am unaware of the EVO's pricetag) - those who aren't diehard Subaru fans like us anyway.

We have to let our dealer reps who have taken our deposits that we will not stand for an over priced STi and will demand our deposits back! Power to the people.

But then again I might change my mind when I see the first car at my dealer... sell my bike... buy used baby stuff... take out a loan or two... how much do you get for blood nowadays anyway?

My hopefully excessive estimate of 10 to 20 grand more for the STi was in crappy Canadian currency. I forget my neighbors to the South. I mean jeeze, we are all North Americans, can't we get some kind of "Euro" for us - maybe call it the "Northo". It would make US/CAN relations easier in forums like this.

Don't kid yourself people...Even at 32k they will not sell as many as they think they should.

Members on this and other Sti sites will say they will pay that, but that a small percentage...maybe what, 400 in the States?

Subaru needs to target the WHOLE nation, not just a few hundred people, and they know that.

Expect lower.

(of course, this could come back to bite me in the ass, but so be it...)

Same here....

And you know, we all get to talking big and bad about "If it's a dollar over $32k, I ain't buying it!" But when you look at the performance of this car, what else would you be able to say you'd get instead and honestly be interested in owning as much?

You can start throwing around 350Zs, Bimmers....but think about what you are all getting. I won't be happy with a base of 32k and then adding another 2k in options, but what else can you do?

I will pay more than $32..but not much...I am gonna try and work with the dealer to get under MSRP if it is that high.

$32 isn't that bad for what you get...of course the STi trades luxury for performance..which is fine by me!!

Any dealers in Atlanta?

30K +/- 2K

This is what I have been saying all along. They will piss people off above 35K. They know this and will act accordingly I am sure...

HANG IN THERE EVERYBODY- second week in January things should become much more clear...

Here's my one reason why it can't be too high...because people will just opt for a regular WRX and mod it to STi level for cheaper. SOA needs to price the STi in such a way that it will be a better bargain than a modded WRX...in which case it won't be $35K...IMHO

Damn

People are worried about what the specs will be on the STi and the price. I would bet the cheaper it is the less goodies we get. There is no way a full fledged STi will be less then $30k. Also unless a vehicle has 4 doors and AWD you can not compare it to an STi. I am supprised someone is still bringing this up too, but there is no way you can mod a WRX to STi level cheaper. Maybe in straight line acceleration but that's about it.

Thats how WE..car nuts look at it, but in terms of the general population and how SOA probably views marketing they see numbers and competitors. When Joe Public is looking for a new sporty/sports car he looks at the brand and price range he wants to buy in. Then within that range he see number typically. The average consumer looks at the WRX as an ugly Subaru (which is typically viewed as a tree-hugger or feminist car) that has the typical wing and flashy hoodscoop. Sure, they see numbers, but the interiour always lets people down. There is no way you could sucessfully sell a stripped out race car to people in mass quantities without creature comforts and things that are gonna make people feel reassured that they spent their money wisely. No doubt about it..the STi is gonna be the best sports car you can buy for the money (that and the Evo), but people still see a car as a car. A G35/350Z, etc compared to a Subaru...its part status and part tactile feel that wins people over. Its not only until after a drive or two will people identify with a car like the WRX or STi.

So, for all intensive purposes there is no reason you can't compare a RWD car to an AWD car. Not to us, sure, but to the public. Heck, most consumers don't need AWD..so "why not save the money, less on insurance, possibly less on repairs down the road, etc?"

oops..I think I stretched it out a bit..sorry..just saying to us they are like apples and oranges, but to the typical media-fed consumer a car is a car is a car..people look at numbers, looks, and amenities.."does it have leather, climate control..etc?" :)

now thats what I am talking about...

You have to look at Joe Public. SOA is already coming in a bit late with the supped-up sports car. The G35, Z, this new Mazda 6, ...etc...

Joe Public pays more for STYLE, and the name....

and when we talk numbers, are we talking MSRP...? Some of us can probably get for a bit over Invoice...maybe.

Re: broke

I doubt Subaru will be marketing the STi to joe public. I know a lot of people that bought a WRX got one because they always wanted a sports car but need something more practical that can be driven all year around. That is what people are going to look at. Maybe if you live down south where it seldom drops below freezing but up here where I live it's different. The STi will be replacing my daily driver so it has to be a 4 door. So I still say, not ony AWD, but a 4 door sedan is a different car than a 2 door sports car. An M5 is fast and costs a lot but I am not going to compare it to a Viper or Lotus.

True..but they still need to sell them.

What about the rest of the population that might live where snow never hits? People still look at power numbers. Remember to the public's eye..."bigger is better." That being said people are gonna look at the STi and compare it, especially when they might not want awd..or may not need it.

I agree with you. I don't think the STi can be compared to the SRT-4, the 350Z, the G35. BUT....SOA is still a company trying to ultimately make money. To make money they must sell and to sell, they must market well enough across a population. They need to be competitive. I think they will..I think they will run it in around $32 max. That's my guess, and Worm's too.

Drove it ???

Hey "MySTi":

I heard the same kind of numbers that you
are talking, as well as the numbers in the
anonymous pm from a couple of days ago.

Low fifties, Canadian.

Man... it is of course a great car, but that
is a LOT of cash, and you can modify a basic
WRX (brakes, suspension, exhaust, etc...) for
about $7500 Canadian... so I hope that the
folks at Subaru Canada can add, and understand
their potential market better.

Don't panic, and hope for about $WRX + $7500
Canadian, or about $43000 to 45000 Canadian.

Otherwise, the '04 WRX has been upgraded from
the '02 and '03 versions, and that is where my money
will go.

It is disturbing also that I have been told that here in
Canada we won't know the MSRP for the STi until
March-ish.

That sucks.
