04 WRX or STI, first time buyer

Anyone know anything about this? Found it on the Subaru of Japan accesories website and then on Japan Parts for $900+ international shipping. I sent an email to get more details.

They look pretty cool, but for the premium price I expect red backlighting (My autometer gauges came with a lightbulb cover to change backlight color, perhaps you could do that with these?)

That's around the price you're going to pay for a nice set of gauges in a pod like that, but those are Genomes and they'll come with whatever lighting is there.

Now....you can find several other pod kits with any colors lighting you'd like. Personally, I'd look around for other kits. You'll save the int'l shipping, maybe another $100 off the pod cost, and get the lighting you want.

the genome gauges are re-badged defis i think. one thing to be aware of is that the pod is for rhd (notice that the boost gauge is to the far right), so it will point toward your passenger. you could always get the gauges and supply your own pod.

hmm when you say "point", you mean the pod/gauges are turned lightly off center? that would be cool. this was one of my main reservations of those pods; they pics made them look like they pointed dead center; pretty silly, and why i've been leaning towards an a-piller setup.

Personally, the humps are exactly what I hate. That's why I preferred the more subtle STi Genome setup, until sakura-iro pointed out above that it's tilted toward the passenger.

Plus, the Defi pod (I believe that's what Godspeed sells) comes unpainted. That's annoying.

I'd like to see the Defi/STi gauge setup with a LHD pod, red backlighting and Imperial units... is that too much to ask? :)

You can get that same gauge pod (the simple one) from your dealer, can't you? They offer it as an install option.....they wouldn't be using the JDM rhd version there, would they?

Now whether you can get just the pod.....dunno. It that's really what you want, I'd go ahead and paint the thing.

No. The STi pod in the picture is a bit fancier than the plain pod you can get from the dealer, but not as extreme as the Defi. I suppose that's what I'll end up doing.

Can't someone tell STi to make a US market version of their Japanese gauge pack? :)

actually, i'm pretty sure that the STi pod is the same one defi sells, although it's hard to tell without seeing it installed.

you can get a defi pod for LHD cars, so it should be a simple matter of getting the genome gauges from japan and putting them in a defi LHD pod.

if only i had the $$$...

We're talking about three pods here...
- The "Genome" pod. It's the one pictured. Has 3 tiny humps.
- The Defi pod. It has three gigantic humps on it and is unpainted. (I hate it)
- The generic Subaru Pod. It's a straight, flat pod.

sakura-iro, I'd also want them to be red! not that it's a crisis, but for the money they should match...

the instrument cluster in the USDM STi has red/orange backlighting. will you all be producing a version of your 3gauge pod cluster that will have a matching red/orange backlighting?
their response...

We are extremely sorry to inform you, but we do not have any plans to produce such item at this stage.
very disappointing. someone will fill this gap, i hope. i wonder if you can change the bulb color on the defi gauge; i.e. is the gauge even openable??

i also asked...

also, is the instrument cluster in the STi based on Defi gauges?? a
friend who works in the auto industry thought that the STi gauges may be Defi gauges.
their response...

For this question, we are not unable to answer from ourselves. Sorry for not being any of your help this time.
can we read between the lines? :)

Hi All,
Here's a shameless plug. We have sold a few sets of the Omori gauges in red needle/red backlighting.

Here's a few pictures:

And one in a customer's STi.

We just recently ran out but will have them back in stock mid-July. BTW, for those who don't already know it, Omori is a quality manufacturer of gauges who OEM manufactures gauges for Greddy and has manufactured gauges for HKS and Apexi.

Additionally, we will also have the 45mm mech boost gauge in red needle/red backlight format by mid July. A few folks have purchased them to mount on the steering column.

We can supply both the OEM center pod as well as the Defi center pod.

Thanks,
Thaison

I'm confused, is there an official OEM STi gauge pod outside the North American market? Can someone post a link and maybe a picture? Is it different from the gauge pod listed as 'PERFORMANCE GAUGE PACK - TURBO' at the following URL? http://www.subaru.com/microsites/sp...d=&year=2004&model=IMPREZA&trim=WRX+STI+SEDAN

I want a gauge pod that looks like it was made for the car.. like it came right off the truck with it already installed... hence my interest in an actual OEM gauge pod.

That URL I gave from Subaru's own website lists the gauge pack at US $568.00 MSRP. I'd imagine a Subaru dealership would charge at LEAST that much and probably charge a bundle for installation. Scoobytuner sells the same thing for US $579.95 (http://www.scoobytuner.com/products/?&productID=69) which could be a good price when you factor in the fact that you won't have to pay tax on it (that is unless you live in Utah).

I would like to have gauges for much more vitals of the car than the [all important] boost, voltage and oil temp of the OEM gauge pack. I am interesting in using a DIN sized digital display unit mounted below my stereo head unit in the dash. Is this sort of thing usually part of a complete engine management upgrade (which I know is not yet available for the STi)? Can someone please post links to specific pages on websites of companies that carry this sort of thing?

Get a PSI3 unit, available from Quantum Racing and some others. Very nice unit. Available for a DIN slot or as a pod on the top. Here is a picture of mine in my STi:

The unit is really easy to install -- it has only one plug which goes into the ODB-II port below the steering wheel / dash. It displays all kinds of info, including peak values for boost, rpm, speed, and coolant temperature. Settable alarms for a few things. The downside is that some things like EGT, fuel pressure, oil pressure, and oil temperature are not included but need separate sensors (which are available). Any 4 values are displayable at once. Seems like a better deal than the analog gauges to me, given the price of the latter.

Man, that PSI unit you have looks pretty sweet!

I still want to have an OEM gauge pod in the dash so I can have a very easy to read boost gauge though. So what's the official word? Is the OEM Subaru gauge pod I posted a link to the only one? Or is there an STi specific one for sale outside of the north american market?

Also, anyone else who knows of other DIN-mount monitoring systems that will easily work in an STi please post links.

Is it the picture of the "red needles" of the gauges do not illuminate?
