O.K. I am just about decided when it comes to what products i am gonna use. Now i just need to know what size speakers will fit the STI. I have seen some varying sizes in previous posts. I would like to get some rock solid sizing down though. What size speakers fit in the STI's front doors and rear doors? What size, depth, etc? Once again thanks in advance for your answers! Peace!!

Comparo wrx to sti?

yeah i saw that thread. He put 5 1/4 in front and 4 in back. But i was sure i saw someone say they put 6 1/2 up front and bigger than 4 in back. Thats why in my post i said i had seen different sizes mentioned and that i wanted someone to clarify for sure what is the largest size speakers that will correctly fit in the front and back doors. Peace!!

probably 5.25" is the "normal" size. i'm sure with some ingenuity and some $$$ (and probably some swearing), you can make 6.5" fit in there.

or you can go custom door panel pods.

i plan on sticking a 6.5" mb quart midbass in the doors...

From what I've been able to gather, the upgraded system on the WRX uses 6.5's up front so any shallow 6.5's should fit up there. Also if you go deeper than 2.5 inches this could complicate installation. As for the back, I've heard 5.25's will fit, but haven't been able to get any good info if it's a perfect fit or some cutting is needed. I've read some places that you do need to cut and at other places that you don't.

I personally have ordered some Inifinity Reference series 6.5's coaxils for up front. I'll let you all know how that goes. I decided to go with the coaxil's because they were about half the price of the components and after getting the STi, I'd like to keep the cost of stuff down. :D Besides the install will be that much easier (hopefully)

I need a stereo now! :p

coaxs also solves the problem if having the woofer and tweeter at 2 diff distance from the ear. sometimes, the distance is great enough that you can get a delay effect.

with coaxes, you dont since each driver is in the same distance.

btw infinity ref series outta rock... good luck.

See this post at clubwrx for a solution to allow most 6.5" speakers in the front. I've seen a few NASIOC people recommend these, and I plan to get a set. They should allow most of the really nice component speakers like the Diamond HEX (2.13" depth) or Focal 165K (2.72" depth) speakers. I imagine the Focal Utopia 165W with a 3.08" depth is just plain not going to fit without some major work.

For the rears, most people seem to be going for 5.25" coax speakers. A couple of the silly local installers don't want to do anything other than 4" since they don't want to actually have to do anything, but most have agreed that 5.25" will be not much work.

Note that I haven't actually received my STi yet, so I haven't tried to actually install these speakers. I'm going to order some 6.5" components for the front and some 5.25" coaxials for the back.

Last Friday I had some 5.25" Infinity Kappa component speakers installed in the front doors and some 5.25" Infinity Kappa coaxials installed in the rear doors. I also had an Infinity BassLink subwoofer installed in the trunk. Everything fit fine and the sound is fantastic! :D I went with 5.25" speakers front and rear since that's what Infinity recommends for the '03 WRX, and as far as I can tell the STi has the same speaker mounting arrangement in the doors.

Anyone install speakers in the rear deck instead of the rear doors. The rear doors seem like a bad location to me.

Hey batman, how do you like that Infinity BassLink? I like the idea of it being somewhat small and have it's own box and amp. I am just curious how it comapres to a similar sized subs in a box.

I originally intended to go with 6.5" component speakers front and rear and no subwoofer, so I bought the dealer's last (demo) xtant A4004 four-channel amp to help power the four 6.5" speakers. After coming to the conclusion that I probably should go with four 5.25" speakers instead, I felt I'd need the extra bass output of a subwoofer. I didn't want to buy a second amp and I liked all the features of the BassLink, so I just bought it without really comparing it to any other similar sized subs in boxes. Maybe I didn't really need the BassLink subwoofer. :-? I was somewhat apprehensive about adding the extra weight of the BassLink and losing the space in the trunk, but it sure sounds great!

update

The eclipse component speakers i want in the front are gonna be 6.5 by
2 7/8 deep. Is that too deep to fit in the front door? I have seen 2.5 deep speculated as the farthest you can go but does anyone know that for sure yet? Thanks for da help!! Peace!!

First Fill Up

I'm going to get Focal 165K's when I hear my STi is coming. They're 6.5" by 2 6/8" deep. I believe they will fit, but I've also heard that some people have some issues (i.e. it fits but it isn't easy). Yours are a bit deeper -- I'd guess they'd be somewhat similar -- fit but a pain. The Utopia's at over 3" would be a real problem.

I just saw this post over at NASIOC that gives some info on how to get more space. I haven't tried it (obviously -- I don't even own a Subie yet) but they look like good things to try (well, #s 1-3 at least, I'm hoping I won't need #4).

I'VE TRIED TO FIT 5 1/4 IN THE FRONT BUT THE DEPTH WAS WHAT GOT ME. THE ONLY FRONT SPEAKERS I COULD FIT ON IT WERE BOSTON ACOUSTICS. IF YOU GET ANY OTHER SPEAKER THE WINDOW HITS IT ON THE WAY DOWN. I THINK YOU NEED 2 1/5 MOUNTING DEPTH CLEARANCE :-?

that sucks about the depth problems. I was planning on finding a shop in chicagoland to do my install but the guy where i live installing my system is considered the "install god" and has huge experience doing audio systems. I am told if he can't do it nobody can. We'll see and hopefully be hearing soon. Peace!!
