Selling my SRT for an STI

Sorry guys, I am not sure where to post this as I just joined the forum and I figured the "general section" fit my topic pretty good... If it needs to be moved by a mod, my apologies lol.

I live in Cleveland Ohio and I currently own a 2004 E-Blue SRT4 Neon... Garage kept since 06 (i'm the 2nd owner) 55k miles, stock other that AEM Short Ram intake and Mopar BOV... I'm looking to sell my SRT in hopes that I'll be able to find a 04 or 05 STI (i'm not a big fan of the new body styles).

Anyone have any advice for me? What should I expect to get from my SRT? What kind of price range is realistic for me to look for from a 04 or 05 STI?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm not sure on the SRT as far as price. Probably statrt around Blue Book and go from there.

The STI depends on how well kept and how many miles. A low mileage one may gor 16-17k where a hgih mileage could be had from a lot less.

Thanks man.

Yeah, I've seen a few nice STI's for sale here already, just from the quick time I've been looking... If I can get 5 or 6 for my SRT I should be able to grab my first STI very soon :)

5-6k seems low to me for an SRT. I thought I seen a few going for around 10k.
welcome, good choice switching it up to an STI, I think you'll really enjoy it! Not to be mean but I always hated the SRT neons (just the look and everything) however I've seen some nicely done up/nice sounding ones around my area. For fun I looked up the KBB value of the car, as you described it, and 6k seems quite do-able (kbb lists $6700 for EXCELLENT and $6300 for very good condition for private sale). I wouldn't expect 10k though as Churbo said.

again this also depends on the exact area you live in and how many miles yours has on it.

good luck with your purchase, hope it all works out for you!!
Forget KBB. Your car is worth whatever someone will pay for it. If you're a good salesman, you'll get more. As for STI prices, look at the forum classifieds here and on nasioc.

A very high mileage may go for $16k, but one with low miles that hasn't been abused is going to be $20k+. There are likely to be issues with the paint at lower prices as well. Subaru isn't exactly known for their outstanding factory paint jobs.

Also, remember you're going to have to pay for maintenance and insurance for this car. As a 31-year-old male with an incredibly clean record, my insurance is less than $100/month, but insurance companies know what these cars are. I have friends paying much more than I do. I mean much more.

Do some research into the weak points on this car and think about taking some preventative measures. The link that Subie_Pb provided is good but not quite complete. As an example, the oil pickup tube seems to fail at random (some last 100k+ miles, some last 30k) and if it does it will take your motor with it. This doesn't seem as prevalent with the earlier models but some have reported it happening. Also the piston ringlands are a known weak point as well.

Good luck, these are great cars but try to find one that's as stock as possible. It's your safest bet as far as reliability.

be careful with older STi, odds are those have been beaten on pretty hard

Del is pretty much spot on:tup: You need to do research and make sure you have good solid knowledge base about these cars. Most people seem to pay high insurance rates, not all but many. And there are other things to consider too but you just need know about them, there weak points, strong points, and any others that may come along. Now on to my difference of opinion. Finding a stock or near stock STI is not really hard. A lot of people take them back to stock or close to when they sell them. The tricky part is why sell and why return it to stock. I think most STI owners (including me) enjoy driving and boost. They go great together. But a truly completely never been modded stock used STI is a rear find. If someone is claiming it's stock and for sell you need to be careful and have the car thoroughly checked out. If it is already modded you still need the same inspection done but you at least you know the cars true operating state, what someone else put into it, if they did a proper install, if they cared about the car at all, and you get all the go fast goodies to boot. Just my .02 though. Good luck.

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys. I really appreciate it!

I'll be the first one to tell you that I am by no means a mechanic, so all the tips help for sure... I've been talking with a local dealer that has an 04 sti for sale, for $21... He said he'd give me $6 for my SRT... I'm thinking if a dealer is willing to give me $6 I should be able to get around $8 if I sell it myself?

Is there 1 specific year that I should be looking for? I really like to body style of the 04 and 05 and I'm not a huge fan of the hatchback, or some of the newer body styles...

Are there any major known issues for the 04 or 05? (sorry, please direct if thread is here somewhere lol)

Here's a link to the STI if anyone cares. Not sure what you can see from pics, but here goes :)

2004 Blue WRX STI

If I'm not allowed to link off the site just edit my post.

Thanks again

I'm no mechanic either, but that things got a fmic and an intake. So I'm assuming its been modded and if the dealer doesn't have the accessport for it I'd run, and even if he did who knows how badly that things been beaten.

Edit* it actually has pretty low miles for an 04, if you really really like it, I'd have them run a leak down test or have a subie mechanic look it over. But again, no accessport would be no sale. Just my 2cents.

The AccessPort is the device that would flash any engine issues correct?
Sort of, it's multifunctional , it is used to store maps from you or a tuner, it can clear codes, monitor and datalog the way your engine is running etc. I'd look it up, cobb accessport. But my point is that's its likely the previous owner had a tune on the car thru an accessport(could've been open source but I don't want to confuse you) and that ap he used is married to that particular car. No car can use it unless its unmarried from that car. If the owner gave the dealer the ap when he traded the car in it helps you(in simple terms) but if the previous owner unmarried it, and sold it, and traded the car in, that's not so good. The car can be running on mods it's not tuned for, and that's a ticking time bomb. Sry I'm bad at explaining this shit, I'm no guru but that's the half assed gist of it.

Thanks for the info... I think the SRT's have something like that, the Diablo Sport Tuner I think its called... I didn't understand the "married" and "unmarried" of that one either lol...

Thanks though, I understood what you said... I'll contact the dealer and ask if they included that (doubtful).

Thanks.
Nothing to add but to say welcome to the forum and hopefully the STI world.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Np, hopefully a more knowledgeable member will chime in but let us know how it all turns out, and keep searching if this doesn't work out, I'm sure there's an sti with your name on it out there!

I just realized there was a "like" button on these forums :)

Thanks for the words of advice fellas... I'll let you know how things shake out
those srt-4 are little beasts if modded, in a straight line.

Yeah man, I love my car, but the Ohio winters are not kind to it... I'm getting tired of driving my 97' Ford Ranger from November to Early April lol.

But, in hindsight, not driving it in the winter has kept my car in really good shape... Only 55k miles for an 04' isn't bad.
