"The STI is still a year or two away.
We are expecting only 500 to 1000 for the U.S.
The MSRP is to be around $30000.
The availability and demand at the time will dictate the price."(that last part is in response to my asking them if they will sell at or below the MSRP price)...

Argh, only 500 to 1000... thats a lotta demand just considering so much hype(hopefully its true)!! eep...

From the message boards on VWvortex, I gather that the dealer has the option to charge over sticker. The Vdubbers are all drooling over the new 337GTI, and people are scrambling to find a dealer that wont charge over MSRP. SOA can't, IMHO, go much higher than euro/japanese prices. $30K is what I would expect- anything higher competes with cars that WAY outclass, if not outperform it. And, I think they have to make a logical, reasonable step up from the price point of the WRX ($24K). Demand may be high, but they will also have to make some official anouncement that includes price and the sticker will have to reflect that. What the dealer adds is entirely up to what you want to give. And now I have given my 2 cents.

This is my biggest concern about the price of the STi... dealer markup. I am still willing to spend a reasonable amount but if dealers tack on $5k or more then F em. As far as other vehicles out classing the STi, I could care less. I do not want an STi for the name, woodgrain dash, leather, or anything like that. Now performance is a different story. Name a vehicle that comes with everything the STi hopefully will in the mid $30k range that performs as good. To me the STi has no competition. A cobra mustang, RX8, 350Z, or anything like that is not in the same category in my book. As a daily driver in the midwest I need AWD and it to be somewhat practical... a sedan with a usable back seat, decent sized trunk, etc. I need the STi!

It isn't so much that its the fastest, or the best equipped. The 337 is the American version of the 25th Anniversary from Europe. It was thought to be nearly unobtainable. Not unlike the STi, or the WRX a couple of years ago. More to the point it is what alot of VDubbers think the GTI should be, with a focus on small, quick, agile, and not weighed down by luxo options. A return to the original hot hatch, that they originated. This vehicle is not intended or expected to be a car for the drag strip or the race track. It doesnt pretend to be able to outperform an Audi S4 Quattro. But as for me it doesn't aspire to enough either. Now, if there's talk of a 3.2L V6 Golf with 4-motion, I might listen.
