Yesterday I was working on cleanup and it occurred to me that sharing my methods might be useful to others.

This is a 3M bristlebrush. Different grits come in different colors. White is a pretty fine grit. They take a little getting used to. They work better at lower speeds which isn't always easy on a die grinder. The techs at Hueberger use these quite a bit. They are outstanding at quickly removing old Fujibond even on aluminum. Of course care should be taken as aluminum is a soft material.

Here's how it worked on my block when I installed a Killer B pan.

Yesterday I used it to clean up the bearing caps and diff housing.

It worked great at removing the rust on the housing.

It also did a great job at removing the corrosion from the bearing caps. Note: I did polish the caps after cleaning them up with my bench buffer.

While I was at it I thought I'd do some test fitting. I found that the studs that go into the new diff cover stick out about 2mm too far. I'm going to cut the threads down a bit more with a bottom tap.

Thanks Dan. Well you haven't had any problems keeping up to this point lol. I'm just hoping after all this these parts make for a pretty noticeable difference around the course.

I made some progress on the diff install. It went OK. I like the Cusco cover, but I have a few minor gripes. Besides the crappy plugs they include and the fact there is no temp sensor adapter (in the case you want to use an external cooler) they don't thread the holes for the studs down far enough. I needed another few millimeters. It wasn't a difficult fix, but with a part this expensive you'd think they get it right.

My backlash was out too. I think maybe it was set on the high side from the factory and wear did the rest. There's not a lot of info out there on setting used gears. One school of thought is to reset backlash on used gears the same no matter what. The FSM says that upon inspection if the spec is out correct it. I went that route. The gears may make some noise, but if they do they should quiet down eventually. Anyway we'll see.


I'm told these are acceptable patterns on a used gear set.







I finally got to use this dial indicator. I bought it around 1993 to set the gears on the '87 Bronco XLT I had at the time. However one of my Dad's friends set the gears instead.





I had a friend of mine make this pretty cool vise adapter. It made torquing the ring gear bolts much easier.







Here it is all assembled. The vise adapter like the above tool also made life much easier.





...and here it is installed.

I decided to up my detailing game and jumped on the foam cannon bandwagon. I have to say they are pretty fun.




The new hardware...



I like that the trigger can be detached and fitted with a standard 1/4" quick-disconnect nozzle. It is so much easier and faster then using a long wand.

Growlfest 2019

Well I haven't been able to race much this year so not much to update. I did a Time Attack event on the 23rd and it didn't go well. It was cold and Nexen's like heat so they wouldn't stick. With all the changes I felt out of sorts too. I also noticed a cloud of white smoke come from the exhaust after my 3rd run.

My block catch can had oil in it, but the catch can for the heads was empty. It was suggested to me it could be the PCV valve. I realized I had never changed it so it was 13 years old. I think it may have been a combination of that and overfilling the oil a bit. The car seemed to work well at the Growlfest so that was a relief.

Here's a run from yesterday's Double Down race.

The car ran much better. I had set the rear rebound incorrectly at the time attack event which made the car understeer and turn in very sluggishly. This time around after correcting that it ran much better. I was actually dragging the mudflaps around the entire carousal turn. The car has never done that before so the grip has increased even with old tires. The rear diff did a great job at keeping the car in line. The brake pads take some getting used to. They're grabby when cold so they just lock up the front tires. Once warm though they feel great. You still have to be gentle though.
