Well I just got the passenger air bag recall notice and I have a couple of questions if anyone did theirs already.

The notice says one hour and 36 minutes for the repair, guy I just set up the appointment with said 3-5 hours?? Any thoughts?

He says they have to take the dash apart, is this the case? I mean I have my power pack amp along with added wiring for audio etc that I would worry will just get stuffed back sloppy style when getting re assembled,

I don’t know I hate dealers and try to avoid them so I’m not liking the whole dash apart idea....

Has anyone taken their car in for the passenger bag replace? What was your experience?

Thanks in advance,

Disco.

That’s what I was figuring, I mean I would think this would be accessible through the glove as you can see the assembly when removed, I might just roll up there tomorrow and talk to an advisor dude on the phone sounded pretty clueless....

If it’s an hour or two cool but dropping it off for half the day seems extensive, and by the recall paperwork saying an hour and 36 min I would imagine that’s all Subaru is giving the dealer for labor..

Anyway......fricken takata!!!!

I mean pulling the dash apart to replace the passenger air bag seems pretty realistic on most cars. Something like that doesnt get done in 1.5hrs...

Now I'm wondering if I mine was just drivers side and I need to go back. I'll verify and note here.

On the GD it is a 90-120 minute affair.

On the GR, since there is no airbag panel on the dash, it is easily a 6-8 hour job. The whole dash has to come out for them to access it. My service guys have done a fair share and rarely get the GR job done under 8.

Well I just looked behind the glove to get a leaf out of my fan that was making noise and yea, no access to anything. Just hoping they can tilt the dash out enough to do what they have to do without needing to take my cluster out, I’ve got my vent pod and cluster gauges wired amongst other stuff. Pondered taking it all out but I just don’t have time:( oh well crossing my fingers will update how long it takes etc.

Thanks for the responses guys, I almost wish they would just let me do it but I understand it needs to get in the system as done to clear the recall on the VIN....

Alrighty took my car to the dealer and I told him, I TOLD THE DUDE IVE GOT AFTERMARKET GAUGES AND WIRING IN THE DASH!!!!!!,

He says cool,

Dropped off annnnnnnnnd just got a call they won’t touch it unless I remove everything.

Cool. Thanks for wasting my day:(

So I guess when I get around to doing that I will take it back but just an fyi before taking it in bring it back to stock form.

And kudos to the dealer not wanting to touch it due to wiring ETC but it’s an 09 sti, how many are stock with not one gauge installed, they should have asked even on the phone does it have any modifications to the dash and if so in order for us to complete the recall it needs to be stock....

Idk whatever I’m cool just a slight bit annoyed:)

i had mine done and it took all of one day to get done (~5 hrs). my friend dropped off his wrx and it didnt get finished till a few days later.

They're replacing airbags all day so its mostly scheduling crazyness that i think causes delays or lengthens it. They do take the dash off, and i'm mostly stock.

They did *NOT* reinstall my dash correctly as the sensor in teh middle of the dash (what is that sensor? just a light sensor?) isnt sitting flush. I got it down as much as i could, but i think they just stuffed the wires back down in that area that i can't get it to sit properly snaptight flush :/

Pfeh... dealerships. ANYWAYS, do DO do DOOOO DO DO DOOoooo get this done! My friend drives a mustang and we live in CA so he didnt think the takata airbag recall would affect his car cuz he read that most reported issues were in humid places, but that's not the case. His airbag went off in an accident and shrapnel from the airbag tore his knee up. think he's still scheduled for surgeries on it.

Luckily our subarus are passenger side only.

I will get it done but it’s gonna be a process now that I have a bit more time, I’m going to take it upon myself to remove everything I can possible so the removal is minimal, center console underdash ac controls everything, that way I can double check what they won’t do right and reassemble myself, pretty sad really,

Honestly I wish I could do it out in their lot but yea, I will update when it’s complete.
