Car and Driver test drove the new Evo 8.

www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/previews/2003/march/0303_preview_lancer.xml

Its interesting but not mind blowing. They estimated 0-60 around 5.4 sec which the factory states will be 5 flat. We all know how bad C/D is with 0-60 so I dont know what to say about that.

Personally I still cant see it more then a steroid Lancer. Give me a break, they just welding things on to the old frame. For a price tag of 12k over the normal one, least they can do is build a new frame and not just weld things onto it..

My 2 cents

The STi's frame is just like the WRX from what I've read in this forum...only with the welds...just like deneed4spd was saying is true with the EVO...so then the STi is just a steroided Impreza  just like one of the forum members has as his signature block

** CAR & DRIVER MENTION: ESTIMATED TIME ** They haven't done the complete test with the EvoVIII yet so there time are speculations. (5.4s and 14.4s 1/4mile)...
"""Quote"""
C/D-estimated performance:Zero to 60 mph: 5.4 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 14.4 sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 14.2 sec @ 98 mph
Top speed (redline limited): 155 mph
"""End of quote"""
Road and Track test drove the EvoVIII and managed 5.1s 0-60 (dropping the clutch at 6500RPM) and 13.8 1/4mile.

ugh!

Quote from the article - "Japan's much fancier "active yaw control" system with helical front, electronic center, and hydraulic rear differentials got scotched for America to hold down prices and to fit a larger, 14-gallon fuel tank."

Oh please! Is that really the reason? If so that's just ridicolous.

God forbid Mistu would sell EVO with anything less than 14 gallon tank. I dont know who would even consider this car

Actually the Evo is more different from a Lancer than the Sti is from the impreza. The Evo and regular Lancer only share 2 parts..the trunk lid and front doors. The suspension, drivetrain, and all other body panels are different. It isn't even close to just a Lancer on steroids..but more of a completely different car that uses the same chassis.

If Mitsu was smart they would call the Lancer ES and OZ-Rally the Cedia and the Evo the Lancer EVO. Subaru doesn't have to do that for many reasons:

1) All Impreza's are AWD
2) All Impreza's share the same body panels
3) None of them are a complete econobox (like the OZ-Rally, I mean, 120HP or something, at least an RS has 165.) :)

Actually that might just be the reason. The tiny fuel tank was one of the major complaints of the VII. That thing had an unrefueled range of barely over 200 miles or something. And if you get on the gas regularly, forget it.

Edit: Meaning the previous tank was even smaller than 14 gal. I think it was something like 9 or 10?
