Opinions on Upgrading GR Front LSD to Quaife

Hello.

I am looking for opinions, especially personal experience to upgrading the front differential to a Quaife. What is the difference? They say the front clutch type is more open and reactive (you have to start slipping for it to start acting) whereas the Quaife tends to anticipate changes, but the downside to the Quaife is that in low traction, it reverts to being open. Is this true?

What would a Quaife front LSD do that the stock one doesn't and vice versa. Looking for opinions, and above all personal experiences from STi owners who've done this mod.

Thank you

The front diff is not a clutch type. It's a helical LSD, just like the Quaife. Even though their name isn't on it, it's possible they made it. Them, or Gleason who makes Torsen.

Yes, helicals revert to open diffs when one tire has too little traction (wheel lift or on ice, for example).
If its anything like the aftermarket unit in some Focus' and Mini's Ive driven will lock up earlier and harder than the stock STI unit giving the car more point and shoot handling.

Unless you have an 04 STi or track your car lots (and already have full suspension) there are better places to spend $1,500.

So basically you guys don't think that ordering a Quaife front LSD will actually change anything in a GR, right?
Oh no, it'll definitely change how the front end behaves under power in a corner but it might not be a worthwhile modification for your use of the car. What other mods do you have?

Right now none, it is 100% stock in every way, but am about to embark in a major mod journey with upgrading every bushing, mount, brace or bracket you can name, sway bars, stage 1 protune, 5 new gauges and AST 5100 shock absorber coilover set.

Also down the line I will likely upgrade the motor internals including pistons, all the Killer B oil stuff, the Crawford AOS, likely carbon fiber driveshaft and an upgraded clutch/flywheel combo as well as some tweaks to make the strongest (and safesty and most powerful) stage 2 setup possible (pump, injectors, DP and possibly headers).

Also considering a 2 row radiator for good measure.

So how will the Quaife LSD change how my already helical LSD'd front end behaves?

I doubt it will change anything. He already has an on axis helical LSD in the front, which is what a Quaife is (or a Torsen T-2). If he were changing from on axis to cross axis (ie a Torsen T-1), some change might be seen.

Edit: They're pretty much the same.

Aren't you the guy that was saying a little while ago how you enjoyed the STI in his stock form and it was moreeeeee power than needed even though you drove hundreds of cars in your life?

But it's nice to see you are about to join the mod-fest ;)

I drove a Ferrari Scuderia, that's what happened.

That and I spent too much time. I just drove the STi home and I was like "how wonderful it is to drive" bone stock but.....
Just get a clutch type 1.0 LSD for front diff.
