I'd like to build the official list here of cars that STi owners should avoid in 1/4 mile and 0-60-type dry pavement drag races.

As far as I'm concerned if it's wet or we're in the twisties then there's not another car available that can compete (EVO fans start flames now). But, for straight-line acceration I'm sure there's a small list to be careful around.

Let me start off the list, here's just my opinion:

- Porsche 911 Turbo (any sub-variety as long as it's turbo)
- Dodge Viper (all or just GTS?)
- just about every Lamborghini that is not a tractor
- all modern Ferrari's ?

Also, I'm not sure but what about the new Mustang Cobra's that are coming out?

I know a lot of the outcome essentially comes down to driver skill but forgetting that for the moment are there any others to watch for? I guess the base-line rule of thumb here is *stock* only - otherwise it would be too difficult to figure out.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Lars

Yeah, has anyone ever tried to launch a Viper at a light when someone next to you is making you really nervous because their $31,000 car has a great chance to beat you. All I see is the tires going up in smoke which Vipers do so well.
Yes, I believe the order is:

  • 1. Viper driver gets nervous and give's her too much on the start.
    2. Back wheels loose grip almost instantly - car creeps to the right.
    3. Viper driver notices STi already 5 car lengths ahead and panics - off the gas quick. Short shifts first, red lines second gear, and recovers by the time third gear is done.
    4. First 1/8 mile is owned by the STi - at a 1/4 mile the Viper should be well ahead.

I think when it's wet, 2 cars have a chance: Porche Turbo AWD and Mithsu/Dodge Stealth with the AWD & twin turbo.

The dry weather watch list have some more cars:
Lambo Murcielago
Mercedes SL600, all xx55AMG variants, especially from a roll.
And another exotic: http://www.moslerauto.com/cgi-bin/mosler.pl?header=/mt900/header_pc.html&content=/mt900/main.html

It will eat you alive at any speed as long as it is not raining.

You can get an CL600 up to about 65-70. My dad has one and we routinely LEAVE work together. From a dead stop I kill him off the line then his traction controll starts to kick off and the power really comes on and off he goes. Of course this is with my old WRX. With the new STi I should be able to hold on a little longer. However his new CL600 twin turbo is coming in a few weeks then I will be losing again.
BTW the CL600 is an awesome road car. Pulls hard all the way to 140. Then it starts to ease up. :D

Once people start rearranging power plants (ECU,chip, exhaust, etc.) the list of cars to watch out for will dwindle. I sure hope Prodrive comes out with some packages soon that won't alter warranty. Anyone know? (I know the Q has been asked before but I don't remember the A - sorry to rehash).

Trans Am Firehawk? I really dont think they have a chance. The 0-60 time on a T/A with the WS6 performance package which is like 330hp is like 5 secs and the quarter mile is like 13.5 TOPS this is with a good driver who doesnt lightem up all first gear. And in the corners not even a chance. Firehawks arnt really any quicker suspension mods and maybe a 10-15 horse difference. The STi as we have seen in mag reviews runs 1/4 mile in as fast as 13.1 and 0-60 in like 4.6-4.9 so its close but we still gottem. :D
