Could be not enough preload. With the car jacked up off the wheels(wheel off) Can you turn the spring by hand? I had this happen on one of my cars with CO's. Was kind of loose but I couldn't adjust preload without just lowering the car more.

^^^ I have not tried turning the spring by hand with the wheel off the ground. But even so, would this make a knocking noise? Thx

 

Well what mine was doing was the spring would stick then break loose and I would hear the pop as I was turning. Also because it was not preloaded it would move from left to right slightly and pop. It was common. Ya know it was probably a manufacturers defect because my wife hit a pot hole and the spring broke. Then it was really poping and cracking.

Hmmm, mine does it whether you're turning or not. The direction of the noise indicates the coilover but the weird thing is no sound whatsoever after five to ten minutes of driving.

 

Mine was kind of the same way. It was intermittent but it seemed like after it twisted and seated it was okay.

Well my buddy removed the coilover, cleaned the debris from the springs and re-installed it. Drove it around for 15 minutes and no noise.

 

Usually after a re-install everything gets tightened down again and the noise goes away...because something was loose. We usually tell our customers to check everything associated with an install to check for loose items if there is a noise.
