Nitrous oxide is not a flammable gas by itself. It is simply a more efficient means of delivering oxygen to your car. More oxygen=more power (given the same or increased amount of fuel, of course). The way it works is: oxygen exists in the atmosphere (the air we and our cars normally breathe) at a concentration of 21%. Nitrous oxide's chemical formula is N2O. Therefore, nitrous delivers oxygen in a concentration of 33% if it's pure nitrous oxide from a tank. This effectively increases the available oxygen and hence power available to your engine. You could open a pure tank of nitrous and hold a blow torch to it and it won't explode. Sorry for the long winded answer, but I wouldn't worry about going up in a fireball should you get in an accident. Now inhaling the nitrous is a different story....
