Nigel's WRB Hatch - Suspension Deliberation

The Backstory:

As a young boy I was given a television remote and told to be good while my parents were entertaining friends. In turning on the television I was greeted by a sight that changed my life forever; cars with big wings, shooting flames, making a proper racket catching massive air. This sight was the WRC, and I wanted a blue one.

At 18 I had the opportunity to test drive a Stage 2 05’ STi and after a WOT pull through 3rd I was hooked. I spent every free moment thereafter lurking on IWSTI attempting to absorb as much information as possible:lol:.

After two unsuccessful procurements of what I discovered were some fairly rough GD’s I gave up on cars concentrating instead on my business and studies. Eventually in the spring of 2012 I decided to check out IWSTI again only to find the site in shambles. Ben had moved on, Bruce was MIA, Dan’s car still hadn’t been finished, Jay wasn't posting 35r launch videos anymore and 400WHP had become the new Stage 2.

What I also found was that there were many new faces doing some amazing things with the GR and GV platform, stuffing massive wheels & tires under them. So, in April of 2012 I jumped back in with both feet and ordered a 2012 WRB hatch. A week later I got a call telling me I'd be waiting until late August at the earliest because it was the end of the ordering season and nothing was available. F-F-FUUUU! So I waited and on September 1st 2012 this showed up:D:

Re: Nigel's WRB Allrounder

Lets face it; sitting in the OEM GR STi seats is worse than having ebola and aggressive cornering will subject a drivers knees and left elbow to the equivalent battering of 3 rounds with a UFC fighter. Naturally, I grew tired of trying to brace myself from falling out the open window or into my instructors lap while at HPDE’s so I decided to purchase some proper seats.

I looked at and test sat in a bunch of seats however to my disappointment not many of them met my rather unrealistic standards for quality, ease of use, comfort and most importantly safety. Being in the business of safety I stubbornly refused to ditch the OEM side airbag protection in the car and decided instead to import a set of Recaro Sportster CS’ with side airbags.

Unfortunately I was going into this blind as the only other person to install one of these in an STi was torquemada who was conveniently located in the EU (where these seats are available) and inconveniently no longer on the forum…

After emailing Recaro and asking about shipping them to a local dealer I got an email that read something like; “Nein dummkopf! Shipping ze airbag seats outside auf ze EU ist VERBOTEN!”

I wasn’t taking no for an answer and with a few phone calls I finally found a dealer that was willing to bend some rules and ship them here. Three months later a massive pair of overnight packages arrived containing my Recaro’s.

Yeehaw!

The seats were dismantled and the covers shipped to JPM Coachworks where Alex and Joe worked their magic creating amazing set of seats.

Fourteen hours (and pair of throbbing thumbs) later I had the seat covers on, airbags wired, passenger detection system plumbed, seats installed and electrical systems tested.

For the last two weeks I've been enjoying them and aside from having to change the manner in which I enter and exit the vehicle I have to say they're phenomenal.

Huge thanks to JPM Coachworks, All Speed Innovations and Alpha Motorsports for making this project come together:tup:.

It'd be impossible to say that your build isn't inspiring mine...although after showing my girlfriend I've been banned from cutting my car in half:(.

I've been there a few times... Quick anecdote here: Back in 2010, I'm the trucker that hauled everything to build the DAVIDsTEA store inside the Polo Park Mall in Winnipeg! From the shelving to the dust brooms, it's all been in my rig! :D So if you ever go there, I hope you'll see it differently from now on! I know, I have too much pride in my work! :p

Funny you should mention that, I was just there (Polo Park). I'll look for the store next time I'm in there.

Next time your on the way through let me know!

Grats on the start of your Journal Nigel :D

Here's a no-brainer --> Sexscribed !!

PS: Winnipeg ... A boring, flat , cold , windy place that plane companies just have to elect as the stop-over

But now... seems one of ours is from there...

Crappy-Peg just got a little more interesting

The only bonus of living here is its cheap so we can spend more on car parts;).

At least im not currently living in an equally cold one horse town like our other countryman(Derek).;):D
Re: Nigel's WRB Allrounder - Sportsters Are In!

Oh and I took one hell of a giant piss at the Flying J on the west side of town... that's what driving for 11 hours straight does to you! Awwwww, Winnipeg... nice toilets and yellow fields on the outskirts of town... canola maybe ?

Anyhow, I disgress... :p

Sorry bro!

Nice journal, F-Yeah!

That's a world class first modification post right there...

As someone who has lusted after the OEM recaros since Oct 2007 (basically unobtanium), i gotta ask the awkward question about cost of the sportsters. PM me a reply if thats more comfortable for you.
Cheers!
