I dont know if it has already been posted, for the poor folks that live in california and can only get 91 octane. It says in the manual that 91 is to be used in an emergency only and 94 is highly recomended.

I highly doubt there will be ANY power loss. Look at the timing graphs that have been posted, knock occurs at 4000 rpm and immediately pulls back to normal and then continues up to redline which is just over where max hp occurs. Plus they could be a little more aggressive on fuel delivery (lean out a little) to make up for any differences. People should not worry about hp loss.

Wow....I hope we can back this statement up. I'll give my dealer a ring this morning.

dxrat.....the pinging situation has nothing to do with gas. The car has to be made to run on something less than 94..seeing as 90% of the country doesn't get 94. People are pinging on 91, 92, 93, 94......you name it.

We've been hoping this ECU issue would help it....we'll have to see.

There's a detonation problem?

Just kidding, I'll check with my dealer as well to see if this has been solved or if they have heard of a resolution. I haven't heard it on my car using 93 octane, but maybe I'm just missing it.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but to me this is the most significant thread I've seen since the 1st reports of det started surfacing. I put an e-mail into my salesman and he's out today but will let me know if he hears anything upon his return. Is there anybody out there that can confirm this via a dealer or svc. dept, or better yet, SOA? While the thought of waiting any longer for my STi has me bristling (GRRRR!!!) I think I'd prefer (obviously) that det issues be addressed before taking delivery. Someone put in a call for Murley.....surprised we haven't heard from him yet! MURLEY? MURLEY? BUELLER?

There seems to be more evidence on NASIOC and other boards that this is true. I am checking with my dealer to see if I can determine if I am a "second allocation" guy and if the ECU problem is indeed fixed in this run.

FYI, the Subaru Customer Service line refuses to acknowledge the problem. Hell, they barely even acknowledged the STi at all...

Well I was the first person in IL to get their STi, so I am guessing my STi is from the first allocation. I now have about 1500 miles on it and since 1001 miles I have been driving it kind of hard. Not bouncing off the rev limiter or anything but doing a few WOT pulls here and there, and have yet to hear any pinging or knocking. I followed the break in procedure to a T and have been using 93 octane gas. I don't know if allocation will have anything to do with it. I also think the first and second alloctions have been delivered already.

We here in NE are still on allocation run #1 I believe. It's the REST of the country that's been fortunate! I don't think the 2nd allocation is supposed to be to NE till mid-July. (with fingers and toes crossed)

I just spoke with the GM at the dealer I'm waiting for my STi at. Apparently they've been allocated my STi so they expect it to arrive mid-late July (this is their second allocation, and I'm under SOA so I'm not sure if the allocations are working the way we think they're working).

I did ask about the detonation problems. He advised me that it does appear the problem is acknowledged, but appears to be limited to the earliest delivered STi's (first 100 or so). I'd encourage someone with a newer STi to ring in and deny or confirm this is the truth. So far this makes sense to me because I have yet to seen anyone with a newer STi say anything.

HTH.

CloNeGTS, Detination has a lot to do with fuel, and the lack of it or the poor quality.
A direct quote from the last page in the owners manual
Use premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 94AKI or higher
Premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91AKI can be temporarily used.
