Newbie questions on 2011 STi

1. The steering is tight (in a good way). Coming from trucks I notice a familar sound- when I am stopped and start to turn, the steering sounds stressed.

This sounds happens in trucks when the steering is cranked ALL the way to one extreme side or the other.

Is it normal for our STi to do such in the immediate stage from turning off a straight line?

2. I got stuck in some hilly traffic Friday, and since then I notice a delay from the releasing of the brakes. (I'm guessing there's a way to turn this off since there's a light with a car on a hill and a line through it) DOes the brake stage engaged even on flat ground?

I notice some tightness mostly when i am backing up to my garage. Almost like it gets stuck.

Would you say that explains what you're trying to say? I am not sure exactly what you mean, maybe i just confused u more.

Not confused LOL

For example, I am backed into a parking spot. When I turn to leave I hear the noise as soon as I start to turn. It only makes the noise upon starting the turn...
Impreza power steering pumps are fairly noisy. Sometimes it's luck of the draw. If the steering works fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

The brakes only hold when the car detects a hill. Yes, you can turn it off (see owner's manual).

Yes thats what i mean. I didnt think nothing of it. But im glad im not only one.
The hill assist is annoying IMO. When I first got my STI I didn't realize it had hill assist and stalled out a few times before I figured out what was going on. I can understand the thought behind it especially for drivers that are new to MT. There is a way to turn it off, like Sabrewings said it should be in the Driver's Manual but if I remember right this is how you do it:

1) Press and hold Traction Control button (Left of steering column next to side mirror controls)
2) Keep holding until the indicator light on the dash appears, turns green, turns yellow, turns off (Should be about 10-15 seconds)
3) Let go of button
4) Within 3 seconds press the button again
5) You should now see the hill assist indicator appear on the dash saying it's deactivated.

Do this or just keep it in neutral when you're on a hill since it only engages when you're in gear, I believe.

Edit: I just re-read your post, if you have the indicator light with the car on the hill with a line through it, that leads me to believe that the hill assist has already been deactivated, someone please correct me if I'm wrong though...so of course in theory the hill assist shouldn't be holding you there...

Thanks for the advice. I'll check out the OM if yours doesn't work.

I've only seen the light when I first turn the car on the dash cycles. The light does not stay on.

His issue isn't hill assist. He's hearing the power steering.

On 08-10's, the power steering is loud when at the maximum turning angle (same as you explained with trucks). But, in 11+, the power steering is loud on almost any quick movement or significant turn. It's very common to all 11+ ever since they "upgraded" the power steering that year.

It's something you have to live with unless you want to upgrade the power steering system.
Noximus: The first issue was yes the power steering but he also had a secondary issue about having the brakes releasing after a delay while driving in hilly traffic.

Matty: Thanks for clarifying that. You should be good then if you turn it off, the hill assist light should stay on once the right sequence has been finished.

See, I don't know how to count past 1.

But ya, hill assist is useless on STIs. It should be turned off by default, and turn it on if you need it with the hill assist light to remind you.

Can hill assist be turned off in 09s? I know it doesn't work for 08, but not sure if that includes 08-10's. I tried those instructions previously to no avail. I'll try again on lunch break.
Ha no worries. I do believe that it works on 09+, like you said 08's no but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to work..."supposed to" being the key point lol.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Forgot to come back and confirm that it works on my 09.

I've never been so happy to have a cluster light on every time I start my car. /s
