subaru has had a problem over the years with clutch chatter or shudder when cold. i have it on my 2000 outback. it's come up often on the subaru newsgroup and other places. please tell me there is no such problem with the sti. thanks.

I've bought two new Volvo's over the past several years and had NO problems with anything. I wouldn't have accepted a chattering clutch...the dealer would see me once a week until it was fixed.

agreed. but it's my wifes car and she claims it doesn't happen when she drive. i suspect it is because she slips the clutch like crazy. <shrug>

that's probably true. but i've driven lots of stick shift cars and the subaru is the *only* one that does this, so i don't think it's my shifting style/timing. in any case, the sti better not have the same flaw.

No problems at all. Smooth and point of engagement is perfect. A lighter flywheel recommended for heel/toeing but it's still pretty smooth.

My '96 Jetta does that when its cold out. But I think its because the last owners put in an aftermarket cluch kit.

since i started this thread, i'll "close" it. i just got my sti this morning and the clutch is oh-so smooth!! in no way is it like the shuddery clutch on our outback wagon when it is cold. i hope everyone else has the same experience as i.

My 2000 RS 2.5 has the clutch judder. Got the flywheel replaced under warranty. Smooth as silk for a week and it starts again. It SUCKS !!! Makes you look like a rookie stick shift driver. I hear even WRX has the same problem. I hope Subaru fixed this on STIs.

I had the shudder on my WRX.

There is NONE on the STi. The clutch is MUCH better. It is smooth and sweet.
