Anyone have any experience with a hard-wired, hidden detector? Most seem to be in the $600 - $1000 range, but the Whistler 3400 is only $150! I've hade some good whistler products in the past, but there has to be some reason for the discrepancy in the prices.

I am very interested in this option myself. I had a remote mount on my motorcycle years ago. The detector was in the fairing and this little inconspicuous box was mounted at the top of the forks near the instruments. You wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it. It had one switch that toggled between mute, off, or audio. On LED blinked faster depending on the signal. It was a very simple, easy to use, always on and working, stealthy system.

I would like something like this in my STI, but I do not want to spend more then $500. I am tossed between the Beltronics 975R (~$365) or waterproofing an Escort 8500 and using the Smart Cord direct wire with it (~$330).

Installing Speakers - No Wiring???? Help

The Escort SR-7 is the same thing as the Escort Passport 8500 which I have.

The system is about $800 installed.

You can get more info at http://www.escortstore.com

$150 for a stealth unit is a joke, you'll get what you paid for.

SEL Ground Performance

i went with the SOLO S2 by escort. It's not completely hidden but it's stealthy in a way that it's wireless, and the screen only turns on when it detects something.

you could do a valentine one on the rear shelf and run the remote display unit somewhere in the dash - like in the pocket under the stereo. I have heard of people going so far as to buy the third brake light housing that mounts inside the rear window (from imprezas with no spoiler) and modifying the housing to conceal the V1. That would give you what most people consider to be the best detector going, but in a totally stealth package.

as mentioned in the pervious post...
http://mikeegan.stormpages.com/v1.html thats a pretty good option.. not very visible
http://zilch.gotdns.org/wrx/install-v1.html thats better directions for the hard wire..

not completely hidden but i dont think most people will notice it. to high for a cop to see standing next to your car thats for sure :D
also i like the location of the remote display..easy to see and useful, just cant access the mute button... which i dont personally see a need for.. if a cop pulls me over im killing the engine.. which in effect will shut that, along with everything else off.. and i cant think of any other reason to mute it.. or mute it quickly and stealthy like..
just my 2c

I've seen the Escort SR-7 for under $500 on EBay.

No reason to mute the V1? Those things never shut up, I'm wearing out the mute button and going to sell mine (the 8500 is a much better product, except the remote "display" for it sucks).

well if it talks to much set it to advance logic and it will ignore most of it. and what i was saying was the remote mute was not really needed.. the mute on the detector itself still works and if i feel the need to mute it i do it there.. i dont need to be sneaky about the mute and its not hard to reach up and hit it.

Lower the sensitivity, or just shut of the X-band entirely if thats what keeps going off. I'm not being paid by Valentine or anything, I just think its a superior product to the 8500.

Subie_Buddah- I've tried all that and it's still too noisy. I guess I'd enjoy the V1 more if it had automute, and didn't have a different alert for each time a bogey is found. Removed the V1 last night and hardwired the 8500 in...

I don't have much of a problem with the V1. I'm very pleased with mine. It can be wired into the bumper also, with only a cigaret lighter adapter for display.

Just a heads-up for people looking for a hidden detector. I just received the Whistler 3400, and all I have to say is that it kicks azz! Everything just plugs in together, it can be mounted anywhere (I was thinking behind the fog light cover), the hand controler is tiny and can be fit in the ashtray or coin tray, has voice (with extra speaker), and is a cinch to install (draws power through unused fuse, like for fog lamps) and doesn't require "tapping" a line anywhere. And I paid $150.

So if your caught in VA with a installed unit do they rip it out? Most of the time they take the regular ones.

If they find it (difficult), I believe they just issue you a ticket.

I think mounting the detector in the location you mentioned is a bad idea.

Most likely the unit you are using is not very sensitive to bands and having it face directly in front of a car is going to decrease the sensitivity even further.
Also it will not be able to detect from the rear.

I recommend hardwiring it into the dome light as high as possible on the windsheild, it will hardly be noticeable if you do it correctly.

The V1 has a optional remote display which turns off the active radar light display making it completely unnoticeable to drivers behind you. Then you can mount the remote display and place it somewhere else.

But mounting it in a low location will not do any good.
