My STI losing stability

1987 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  tastetickles
I participate in track day to 6 months, and had never left the runway

But it happened last week

This with traction control turned off and I can confess that I got stronger in the curve to try to open the turn quickly

Could not complete the comeback, the tires were cold, it helped her lose the rear

Prejudice to R$1800 (900 dollars)

Some of you have already left the track in track day?

It seems kind of rare it happens
Almost seems like you over corrected with countersteer and when it regained grip cya.
I haven't been off yet but have had moments like yours. Typically not much steering correction to catch it.

Will have to watch again later hard to see on phone.

Thank heavens for gravel traps lol. Our track is just grass, feels like you're accelerating when you go off.

AWD requires almost counter-intuitive amounts of steering correction when it lets go (unless you're at a wild angle).

Ahhh wipers on a bright sunny day, always the sign of impending doom... :D

My cure for everything when AWD is involved... stomp that gas pedal to the floor and enjoy the ride! ;)

I was mostly watching your hand positioning, and you seem to be shuffling them a bit. I don't know exactly what your Brazil-spec steering rack ratio is, but unless you're pulling e-brakes or going sideways on gravel, keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 position, and with a little throttle control, is all that is needed.

If anything, your STI gained too much stability than losing it.
You had it for a split second until you over corrected.

Couple things I noticed:

- Looks like you're too hot on the throttle on the last 3 corners.
- Avoid shuffling as mentioned above my post.
- Relax! You look too tense!
To me, it looks like you entered the corner too fast and the car started to mildly understeer. Noticing this, you likely starting braking in the middle of that turn, transferring too much weight off the rear tires and initiating the oversteer. I suggest next time for you to simply lift off the throttle to correct the understeer. Once you start to oversteer, countersteer and give it gas. DO NOT stay on the brakes or you'll keep the weight off the rear tires and the result will be what happened to you, or worst. Thank goodness for gravel traps!

Bottom line I don't think your STI lost stability as your title sugests. Just watch that weight transfer.
That's what I saw too, off throttle at turn in followed by over correction. Interesting to note you're tank was on empty, which may have contributed. That may have been the proverbial Monty Python 'thin mint' that tipped the scale on car balance.

Thanks for the video. :) It's an excellent learning reference.

You all missed the obvious cause of the accident. He was clearly texting while driving. His last text read "Oh shit!!"

From what I see, you might need to practice better steering control i.e turn steering with pulling instead of push particularly while correcting the slides. It seems like in panic mode, your hands can't quite coordinate as fluidly when a lot of steering is involved. For example, making a right hand turn that involves a lot of steering requires the a repositioning of left hand to 7 or 8 o'clock before moving the right hand to 10 o'clock to pull the steering clockwise.

Maybe I'm wrong, I'm just suggesting what I think may have happened from what I see
