Dealers with STi's for MSRP

i stopped at exxon to do my first fillup of 93. i stick the nozzle in and set it as usual. while it's filling up, i noticed the label inside the filler door that says to not fill more than when the nozzle clicks off. i thought, 'okay, new car so i'll start new habits.' as i'm waiting for it to finish, i thought for a second to run in and get a candy bar, but decided not. a few minutes later, i here this big splash. i look down and gas is blasting out of the filler; the damn nozzle was defective and didn't click off. i yanked it out after probably 3/4 gallon had spilled. it's on my hand, my leather dress shoes...MY NEW CAR!!! what crappy luck...

Im not sure if our cars come with a clear coat but did the gas damage your paint at all? I was wondering because I got some bird bombs and some of them stained the paint. I tried rubbing them off real hard but it wont come off.

Re: so close... yet so far...

Yeah, check your paint carefully. Gas will eat the clearcoat quickly, and then the paint. If your paint looks dull, go back to the gas station and ask them who their insurance carrier is because you need them to make a claim.

What happened to the variable power steering?

If you make a claim against the gas station, you can bet their lawyers are just going to say it's your fault. In most states, it is illegal to pump gas and leave the scene, or even get back in your car. It is posted on every gas pump, so if you try to make a claim, you may end up with a ticket.

And yes....all modern cars have clear coat finishes.

Personally, I've never seen damage from gasoline to a finish. Everyone has spilled a trickle here and there....never seen as much damage as a nice ripe bird present would leave.

I take it you believe the the cars fuel fill is to blame rather than the pump/nozzle?

it's certainly clear coated. re bird bombs, same here. i've been fanatical in the last few days of washing/rinsing it as soon as i see evidence of this. so far, they've all come off. the nuisance, as always, it the little pinpoints of tar/asphalt.

hmm. this hadn't crossed my mind; that it might the a subie problem or the way i put the nozzle in the tank. geez, i've been pumping my own gas for 22 years. it's hard to believe it was my fault. i will be more deliberate next time i fill up. if it happens again (or to others) then maybe it's a subie problem. egads, that would suck.

that's my experience also. i've hand my share of accidental spills with my white '91 se-r. until i totaled it 11 years later, the paint never showed any sign of spills. either the paint or the clearcoat was resistant. i'd have to think that things are even better now in 2003. (or is it 2004? :) when i added my car to my policy, my insurance lady cracked up. "they're here already!", she exclaimed jokingly.)

oh man, i'm so glad there are no mulberry bushes around here! we had them where we used to live. by midsummer, the "purple rain" would start and last for a few weeks. disgusting.

I think it's a design defect. I've had my STI for a little over a week now and have put gas in it 4 times. Twice it barfed gas out over the car before
activating the nozzle shut-off. I'm very careful when refueling and have
never had this happen to my other cars using the same pump.

Other cars refueled at the same pump w/o probs:

1994 RX-7
1995 Eclipse GSX
2003 Murano

Both times this really pissed me off, because I had to run home and
reapply wax over this area. Twice in less than 10 days is not a
coincidence!

When this happens to me I just grab that little squeegy thing and rinse off that part of the car...just in case. I have gotten some strange looks though...
I do the same thing when this sort of thing happens to me, but it's only a "better of two evils" thing. The water from those squeegies is disgusting. I just try to use it to rinse it off....but I never actually touch the squeegie to my paint.
